Lord Ifan is the second spare heir of a Gruffyl/Numaness pairing. Since he has no realistic chance of inheriting a Numaness without a lot of kinslaying, he opted to become a Gruffyl and climb the ladder by merit. The fact that he has heterochromia also pushed him to become a Gruffyl because many assumed he was anyway.
He is not physically gifted but he is smart and well educated. He has a great aptitude for Abjuration and dabbles in Divination and Necromancy.
