Kurzelcut Federation
It is the only entirely gnomic state, it broke away from the Republic of Touran when the southern territory was invaded by Darkness.
Not all the inhabitants of the Republic agreed with the creation of an army and the carrying out of war in the territories infested with darkness. When the southern part of the republic was invaded, all those who felt threatened and disappointed by the slowness with which the Senate of Touran was reacting to the threat, decided to take control of the territory to militarily oppose the advance of the Darkness.
This secession led to the constitution of the nation of Kurzelcut (the gnome general who led the war against darkness), which thanks to very important technological and military efforts allowed not only to block its advance, but also allowed its reconquest. of some territories that had fallen under it. The cities of Scorcross and Ushur have been liberated and now the army plans a major operation to recapture Ringlastan.
The Kurzelcut Federation is made up of the various secessionist territories, in which each city is administered by a Coordinator, whose task in peacetime is to provide for its own Department, applying the guidelines of the Directorate General.
These gnomes are obsessed with books and knowledge, their yardstick as a scholar is "publications". The number of books published and their circulation is the measure of a person's success. Regardless of the subject dealt with, the city circuits of conferences and academics exist for dissemination; the best studies are promoted and funded by the state. The Coordinator indicates the most interesting researches carried out on his own territory to bring to the attention of the central apparatus and verifies that the researches and publications in his territory follow some minimum levels of importance, in order not to upset social life with useless texts. In wartime he coordinates the effort of the population, industries and laboratories to provide the army with what it needs.
In the capital resides the General Directorate, elected in equal shares by the 5 castes, who appoints the General Coordinator. He governs through multi-year development plans with the aim of promoting the best research, the dissemination of the best texts and coordinating the productive activities of the cities.
In times of war, the Directory appoints a Grand Marshal who manages the supplies of the army and, as per tradition, also presides over activities in battle, inspired by the figure of General Kurzelcut.
The society is divided into 5 main castes: Workers, Bureaucrats, Soldiers, Merchants and Scholars.
All gnomes can try to publish a text, a Merchant on his travels, a worker a manual on the maintenance of a machinery and so on but the Scholars are the caste with the highest esteem and the highest chance of having a text published. Seeing a publication refused is a very hard blow to the self-esteem of every gnome and whoever receives too much rejection becomes a social pariah.
The most renowned scholars join an "Academy of Sciences", a body which is responsible for suggesting to the Directorate which research should be financed.
The gnomes who deal with the bureaucracy of the central apparatus are frowned upon by all the other castes, but in their defense they argue that without their activity the entire Federation would be blocked.
The army is an integral part of the Federation's society, all gnomes over 40 years of age must perform military service for at least 10 years, at the end of which they are discharged and placed in the reserve until they reach the age of 100. In the event of invasions by forces of darkness, all reservists are called upon to take up arms and defend the cities.
The Workers are organized in trade unions, which monitor the progress of production and work activities in every single factory.
The production of techno-magic items and mass consumer goods is the main economic activity, makes cities very rich, and largely supports the financing of the war against the Darkness.
