Ygg, the father of serpents, is introduced as "the serpent-god of the tribes of Kamamaya Island.
History describes him as: "a strange half-anthropomorphic snake of a highly arbitrary and capricious nature. He was not entirely evil and was usually quite sympathetic to those who respected him and his snake children; but in the autumn he became abnormally ravenous and it must be driven out by means of suitable rites.
The main quality of the serpent-god was "unrelenting devotion to his children", making it taboo to kill snakes. Those "who taunted him or harmed his wriggling progeny" suffered the "curse of Ygg", in which the deity "transformed his victim, after suitable torture, into a spotted serpent".
