The Beloved Goat

Purpose / Function

Though it is considered a lower class tavern now, this tavern was one of the first taverns to be built in the area.  The owner wanted to take advantage of the new oppertunity provided by the growing community.

Entries

The front door is on the right side of the short wall.  There is a stairway to the right of the bar in the back - the bar itself is L shaped and has it's short side facing the front and it's long side facing the left.  There are several narrow windows high along the wall to the left, but only a couple on the right due to the stairway.  There is also a door behind the bar.   If you circle the bar from the outside you will find another door in the back.  The door is of sturdy construction and usually kept locked.  The windows in the back are also narrow and high up on the wall.  However, the back does not have a second story, but a roof garden.

Sensory & Appearance

The lighting is dim with smokey candle lanterns on the walls and tables casting flickering shadows.  The smell of smoke mixes with the smell of sour alcohol and dirty rushes.  Raucous singing rises from a table to the left and loud laughter sounds from the bar.

Denizens

As you approach, you notice the tavern clientele can be rather rude. On this occasion, there are a couple people singing a drinking song. Several other male patrons have females on their laps, and other patrons are keeping to themselves. A worried male Dwarf is standing by the bar, laughing at something happening in the tavern. A drunk male human is standing near the entrance, watching the entrance to the tavern intently.   The ex-soldier owner serves as the bartender. His disposition is generally described as humorous. He is attractive with brown skin and dark hair in a long, straight style, despite having put on weight since leaving the military.   Occassionally, when things are especially busy the ex-soldier's wife will act as a barmaid.  She has curly brown hair that she wears in a topknot at the back of her head.  She would be attractive if not for her scowling countenance.

Alterations

No alterations have been made other than replacing the bar.  Indeed little upkeep of any kind has been done in recent years and the building appears quite run down.   The original wooden bar was replaced when it was damaged during a particularly violent bar fight.  The new bar was built of stone and includes several depressions for placing open wine jars.

Architecture

A wooden building with a limestone tiled roof, the Beloved Goat stands two-stories tall. The wood is a rough weathered gray. The roof is also a mottled gray, giving the tavern a depressed appearance.   This place is typically bustling with patrons. Inside, the tavern's walls are decorated with scrimshaw, carved from freshwater shells. The carvings are silhouettes of people boarded by geometric designs. Most of the shells are plane brown or gray, however, there are a few striped snail shells.   The tavern does have rooms for rent but they are tiny and dingy.  There are currently two rooms available at the cost of 3 coppers per night.  However, a good night's sleep would require a heavy sleeper as patrons come and go throughout the night.

Defenses

The ex-soldier keeps both a sword and crossbow behind the bar.  Patrons like to tell a tale about him pinning a man to the wall.

History

The owners are an ex-soldier Mycean human and a rich Silvian Elf. When the soldier retired his father-in-law offered to sell him the tavern. The elf wanted to buy it, but the locals tend to be suspiscious of elves.  So instead the elf provided the financial backing for the ex-soldier and they became partners.

As a half-elf thief, I would drink here and pick pockets as I sat in a mark's lap.
