Andriy Shiroko

Emperor Regent Andriy Shiroko

Andriy came to power in 1057 after the deaths of his older siblings, Olha and Yakiv. While on the throne, he was thrust into the responsibility of both ruling and raising the heir, his nephew, Taras, whom he physically, emotionally, and sexually abused for 13 years. His acts as ruler, a position he never wanted, were considered both stingy and cruel by his family, with his most famous act being the institution of a trial and punishment method known as "The Fall". He was strangled to death by his nephew in 1070.

Personal history

Andriy was born in 1026 while his mother, Inna Shiroko, was still under house arrest for going against her father, Ilya VIII. He was the third of the royal grandchildren, younger brother to both Olha and Yakiv. During that time, he became very close to his older brother, and tried to be close to Olha as well, although she stayed with their mother most often as the second heir.   It wasn't until he was 7 years old, that he was allowed out of the house and began to interact with more people than just his siblings and parents. During his Attunement Test, it was found that he was a very weak pyr-esh and he practically glued himself to Olha in order to learn everything about the manipulation of heat. Inna allowed this to continue and Andriy developed a deep affection for his sister through her lessons with him.   However, upon Inna's ascension baejan in 1032, he was pushed away from Olha and her time was occupied by growing closer to Yakiv, who was to become her royal consort once Inna retired and Olha took over the empire. It was then that his jealousy toward his brother began. In order to surpass him in any way, Andriy began doing what Yakiv loved, but never had much talent for, creating art. He was able to make some very good pieces out of spite, one of which is still displayed in the Statue Garden in Niuus.   After Olha took the throne, he was promoted to vice head of the Department of State Affairs, working directly under his uncle, Kyarlo Shiroko. There, he learned a great deal about the inner workings of the empire and was able to remain close to Olha. However, his jealousy toward Yakiv grew until he began a plan to be rid of him. In his mind, if Yakiv was gone, Olha would marry him as the next logical choice within the family. The power that came with being the royal consort meant less than nothing to him.   His plan was delayed slightly but ultimately succeeded in 1057, resulting in not only the death of Yakiv, but also of Olha. Despondent, guilt-ridden, and enraged that his love was stolen, he assumed the throne in a somber ceremony and took over guardianship of his nephew, Taras, who was six at the time. This was also when his relationship with his mother began to deteriorate as she suspected him as having some involvement in Olha and Yakiv's deaths. In the end, he made a deal with her whereby she would leave the Gandenye, seeing Taras rarely, and he would neither marry nor have children who could cause a succession crisis.   This furthered his resentment of her, but also directed it toward Taras himself and Andriy began to take out his anger on the boy, regularly demeaning and beating him. In 1058, he also began sexually abusing Taras. On one hand, he was able to dominate something that had belonged to Yakiv, but also hold onto a piece of Olha. As Taras grew older and began developing more as a man, Andriy did everything he could to keep him feminine so as to keep an image of Olha around, up to and including starving him to keep his body from developing large muscles during his training. His only positive interactions were the necessary teaching of Taras in the family stitching magic, and when the boy began to surpass him in ability, his jealousy caused the abuse to become worse. Along with this, he thought others saw him as merely a placeholder, waiting for Taras to come of age, which furthered his resentment of the boy.    As a ruler, his attitude toward the daily running of the empire made it clear he had no interest in the position. However, he continued to work just to prove he was capable of doing so, both to spite Inna and to show Olha's spirit that he could have been a better tsudaeba than Yakiv. One of his most notable achievements was the reformation of the empire's taxation system. This led to a large windfall of money in both the public and imperial accounts, much of which went to strengthening the southern border and paying off debts incurred by the Fourth Great War. His other legacy was the institution of 'The Fall' at the Tiberi Courthouse, a trial and punishment rolled into one in which a person is thrown from a cliff. If they survive, they are innocent, if not, they were guilty.   His end came in 1070 when he was once again in the middle of raping his nephew. Taras reversed their positions and strangled him bare handed. After this death, he was buried with the rest of the family and Taras installed as the new emperor.

History

As Andriy's mother, Inna raised him from childhood, although she was not as present as his father, Fedir, due to her position as empress. After Olha and Yakiv's deaths, she suspected her second son of involvement in the murders, but had only conjecture. His fierce opposition to allowing Taras to spend time with her, and the subsequent fear and strange behavior her grandson exhibited while with her further deteriorated their relationship as she believed Andriy was abusing Taras, but could do very little to stop it.   Andriy respected her as his mother when he was a child and into his early adulthood. However, after Olha and Yavik died, her suspicions regarding his involvement and subsequent behavior with Taras let him to exile her from the Gandenye. Their relationship never improved and they only spoke when absolutely necessary until Inna's death.

History

Yakiv was initially excited to have a younger brother, but became disappointed when Andriy latched onto Olha much more than himself. However, he tried his best to get along with him. As Andriy became more skilled in sculpting, the two often discussed art at length. He had no idea how much Andriy hated him.    Andriy, at first, got along with his older brother as much as siblings could be expected to, but he gravitated more toward his elder sister. As they grew older, his resentment that Yakiv would be the one to marry Olha, and did, increased and ultimately led to Andriy orchestrating a plot to assassinate him.

History

Andriy saw Taras both as a substitute for Olha and Yakiv. His need to have a piece of Olha after her death let him to sexually abuse his nephew. On the other hand, his desire to dominate and subjugate Yakiv caused a great deal of emotional abuse toward Taras. As Taras grew into his early teens, his became more powerful in magic than Andriy, which further increased the man's resentment. Andriy's view of Taras continued on its warped path as he ultimately saw himself as merely a placeholder for the one the rest of the family wanted on the throne instead.   Taras was originally fine enough with Andriy while his parents were still alive. However, those feelings turned to terror as the abuse began and escalated. He withdrew into himself and the lack of help from the wider family or nobles generated horrible resentment and rage in him. His fear of his uncle culminated in him strangling the man during an attempted rape by Andriy after a total of thirteen years of abuse.

History

Olha liked her brother well enough, but sometimes saw him as an annoying younger sibling, especially given that he followed her around often. As they grew older, she found him a competent part of the Department of State Affairs and listened to his advice. She knew he was more fond of her than was normal even in the inbred dynasty line, but did not think his affection would lead to anything negative so never spoke of it with him.    Andriy was a shadow to his older sister throughout their childhood and in his late teens fell in love with her. He hated that she was going to marry Yakiv and tried to surpass him in any way possible. After the wedding, he kept close to her through his work for the empire. Ultimately, his jealousy toward Yakiv let to an assassination attempt that, unfortunately, let to Olha's death as well.
