Vey LeThamp

Lord Vey LeThamp (a.k.a. The Wolf)

"I'd be careful if I were ya. There's a reason someone so short can confidently control all in his pack." - Luther Blackspear, Alpha of the Wolves of Vey   Sitting at the crossroads of the continent, Vey LeThamp remains one of the most competent military commanders and politicians of the modern age.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Despite his distinctive movements, he carries it well. One would find it easy to tell he was a veteran of combat. He has a slight limp, but never appears to be in pain.

Apparel & Accessories

Vey always wears two exceptional items:
  1. His pack leader pin. A pin made of solid gold, in the shape of a wolf head, in a circle.
  2. His silver band. A band made of pure silver, always pristine. He always wears it on his left ring finger. People often spit vicious rumors about his marital status, despite the fact he has, on multiple occasions, claimed he was never married, and never sired any children. Despite this, political opponents have often portrayed him as married to a common whore.

Personal history

Vey LeThamp's early years are shrouded in mystery. He has never spoken about his parents or any possible siblings, likely for their privacy, but he has on occasion spilled the info about his childhood.   Vey was at one point described as "aloof," and many of his clan had believed that he would remain until his twilight years. Vey often spent days eating, drinking, or generally lazing about under the soft summer skies so commonly experienced by his home in Drivell. He was never popular with the other children, but he often didn't care and rarely spoke to anyone except his immediate family. He did have a single friend, though. When Vey was around 16, he and this friend were exploring the woods around his house, when Vey had tripped over a stone. Upon closer inspection, it wasn't a stone, but a tome, unmarked, though well-kept otherwise. As he opened the book, it lept out of his hands and began to emit bright blue lights from the seams and creases on every page. His friend looked away. Vey sat in rapt attention, almost mesmerized by the spectacle in front of him, the pages revealed themselves to him, and they began to flip faster and faster, though Vey held onto every single word. When the book was complete, it burned to ash, and fell into the wind, never to be seen again. Many scholars believe this book to have been an Art of War, specifically on the garrisoning of troops and guard formations. After this incident, Vey remained aloof, but in a very different way.   When Vey was 27, he enlisted in the Drivellian military as a footsoldier with aspirations to rise through the ranks. This decision was a complete shock, not just to his family, who never thought he had the guts for war, but also to the recruiters, for whom a halfling was a rare sight. Vey's official reason for joining was to defend his empire from incursions, but those who were close to him saw a much different kind of passion within Vey, the kind that would guide him no matter what. Vey was just in time to prove his mettle during the Fool's War, where through victory after victory, he displayed intense loyalty and military competence. One humorous story recounts the time when, in the heat of a siege, Vey was picked up and nearly used as trebuchet ammunition. A story which Vey himself embarrassedly confirmed.   Vey was rewarded with many titles and connections as a result of his bravery during the Fool's War. He was even given the rank of Captain, becoming the first halfling to reach that rank in the Drivellian military in nearly 100 years.   When Vey was 67, he retired from the military but still felt the fire in his belly burn. He used old connections to drift around and stay with the noble families of Drivell, often for months at a time. He used this time to learn how to lead people, all the time. Not just during wartime, but during the peace times as well. Notably, despite his enthusiasm, Vey always seemed uncomfortable staying in the nicer parts of the residences, often preferring to sleep with soldiers or slaves. This period of his life jumpstarted his interest in political philosophy, which he pursued in the current age.   Vey attended a small university, to increase his knowledge of political philosophy, and after that, at 78 years old, he once again set out to lands unknown, except he knew exactly where he was going.   Salazim during this period was just through having its series of popular revolts, ousting a highly unpopular prince, which created a power vacuum, to allow multiple pretenders to sit upon the throne of Salazim. When Vey arrived, during this time, he saw the chaos around Salazim, how civilians were being threatened and harassed, and how criminals stole the same things back and forth from each other. He was determined to stop this as soon as possible. He spent the next couple of years, gathering the most capable men and women he could find of Salazim, and organized them, and trained them, as counter-thieves, as Vey called them. Essentially, the initial plan was to use the thriving tactics against aggressors, to beat them at their own game, but after public outcry, he quickly needed to reinvent them. Around this time as well, there was some infighting among the group, and factions began to form as this organization grew bigger. Vey recalled a story from his childhood about a wolf and a leopard. In this story, they both saw a huge gathering of prey. The leopard attacked first, unable to get any animal, and so he starved and died. The wolf gathered his pack and attacked the group at once. They returned more than their fair share for the entire pack, and so Vey set to work.   The Wolves of Vey proper were not officially organized until Vey was around 80, and he set up his organization in an interesting way. He took the leaders of the in-factions of the group before and made them Alphas, which allowed them to retain a certain amount of power, but they still had to report to and obey Vey and his commands. For the past 40 years, Vey has been refining this structure, experimenting with what works and what doesn't, to varying degrees of success, but Vey is now a household name in Salazim.

Education

Vey attended Kalamor College, where he pursued an education in political theory. His teachers seemed to notice his supposed natural talent, despite both his upbringing, and his race. This opened up many doors for him, including special visits with much of the social elite of Drivell. Princes, counts, and the greater nobility were all the host of Vey on many occasions. This allowed Vey a view into a world that could never be seen in a classroom, one where politics evolved as time wore on. Vey took many of these lessons with him when he left.

Accomplishments & Achievements

At only 32 years of age, after only 5 years enlisted in the military, Vey was awarded the rank of Captain, being allowed to command his own chapter of men. Halflings are rarely found among the ranks of any military, much less in ranks of high importance. Vey was the first halfling to hold the rank of captain in the Drivellian military in over 100 years.   Vey is also known as the "Pack Leader" of his own paramilitary organization, The Wolves of Vey. This title typically implies the ultimate authority of the organization, but since Vey is the first Pack Leader, it also is the organization's founder. Vey considers this his crowning achievement, especially considering the state in which he found Salazim.

Wealth & Financial state

Vey has negotiated funding from the vast wealth flowing into Salazim, eventually instantiating a tax that not only allows him to fund the wolves but also line his own pockets with the wealth of the merchants.
