Wolves of Vey
"Now this is the law of the jungle
As old and as true as the sky.
The wolf who shall keep it may prosper
But the wolf who shall break it must die
As the creeper that girdles the tree trunk
The law runneth forward and back
For the strength of the pack is the wolf
And the strength of the wolf is the pack."
- The Law of the Jungle, Rudyard Kipling
The Wolves of Vey are a paramilitary faction operating out of Salazim.
Structure
Pack Leader
The pack leader is the head of the entire faction. This is an appointed title, as determined by Vey after his passing. Though they ideally will be an Alpha with years of protective and service experience, they are expected to refrain from active duty and take on the bureaucratic responsibilities expected of any organizational head.Alpha
An Alpha is the leader of what is internally called a pack. The Pack Leader personally appoints them, and rotates on patrol between the pairs of wolves and their respective pups, or a fellow wolf, if they do not have a pup to care for at the moment.Wolf
This is the rank that most members are entitled with, and many take pride in the fact that they get to protect and serve alongside fellow wolves. Wolves are assigned to different parts of the city, traditionally not the part they either live in or are from, to prevent as much conflict of interest as possible.Pup
This is the lowest rank in the organization and is reserved for new recruits learning how to enforce the laws in a high-stress, high-impact environment. Everyone starts out as a pup and provided they don't quit or die on duty, they are promoted to Wolf after a year. They are assigned a current wolf to be their mentor, to dually provide protection and learning and build bonds with their fellow men.Culture
Every member wears a wolf pelt, crafted specifically for them and depending on their rank. Pups typically wear a wolf cub pelt as a scarf around their necks. Wolves wear adolescent wolf pelts, traditionally as a vest, on top of whatever armor they choose to wear. Alphas wear full adult wolf pelts, as capes, and all Vey wears is a specially crafted pin with the symbol of a wolf on it.
Public Agenda
The idea that originally brought the first wolves together was the common goal to keep the streets of Salazim safe from bandits and charlatans in the absence of an organized guard in Salazim.
History
In 756, Vey Lethamp was dismissed from his duty as a captain in the Drivellian military, which was as soon as he possibly could have made it. He was sick of the corruption within his company, and he sought a place where the law was better upheld. He was aware of Salazim, and its free reign, outside the command of the Bandhorian empire, and so he went.
When he arrived, he found that criminals ran rampant in the street and that only the wealthiest of the city had constant protection in the form of hired militia. Vey sought to right this obvious wrong, and he thought to do so by recruiting members of the mercenaries guild. Within the week, he had formed a very loose organization.
Since then, many citizens have flocked to his ranks, which has caused them to flourish unofficially under the government of Salazim as an unaffiliated policing force. For a while, the group was only known as "Vey's swords", but Vey wanted to rebrand them as something more fierce, and something that inspired not just courage and ferocity, but brotherhood and camaraderie as well. He recalled a story his father had told him about a hunting trip he went on where he killed a massive wolf, and how it used its small numbers to overwhelm even the best of his party, and so, the Wolves of Vey were born.
