Ido the Heartthrob Character in Shadowland | World Anvil

Ido the Heartthrob

We of the Helix are here to tell you a bit about the United Netherlands, and part of that is our musical industry. When modern music is mentioned, one specific individual jumps out: Ido, a human singer with a raw voice. He is famous for his rock ballads that cover tragic events in the history of Europe in general, and the United Netherlands specifically.   Ido's performances focus on his songs, with limited instrumental support and a low amount of special effects. He mostly plays with light and shadow, making his shows a wonderful artistic thing to watch. Helped by his great looks, his voice breaks your heart and his face mends it, which is why he is often nicknamed 'Ido de Hartendief' in Dutch, and 'Ido the Heartthrob' in English.

Personal life

Ido was born as Ido Geertsma in 2040, the fourth child of six, from a deadbeat Human father and a hardworking Ork mother. He has four sisters and one elder brother. Two of his sisters were born as Orks, the rest of the siblings is Human. His maternal grandparents helped raise the kids. They originated from Friesland, where they lived before the Toxic Tide hit the United Netherlands. Their stories helped inspire Ido's debut album, "Struggle", released at age 19.   As a very private person, Ido has kept his romantic life to himself. Even though we live in an age of spydrones and more cameras than bullets, only a few suspected dates have been reported by paparazzi. He has been linked to several romantic partners, of which only two have ever acknowledged their history with him. His family also stays out of the spotlights, except for his mother, who attends all his performances.

Discography

From his countless singles and over a dozen albums, two jump out. The first is "Struggle", a name based on the Zeeland motto 'Luctur et emergo', translated as 'I struggle and emerge'. The album's theme is all about struggles where no clear path out is visible, from romantic to wageslave to the endless fight against nature. Ido's grandparents were one of his largest inspirations for the album, and as Friesland is still covered in toxic sludge, there is no 'emerging' present in any of the songs.   The second is "The Hunger of the Beast", released in 2075. Like most of Ido's songs, the lyrics are filled with metaphors. It is, however, very clear that many of the songs are directly about GeMiTo, where the Great Dragon Alamais hunted humans. The songs cover Dragons hunting people, and the traumatic war that Lofwyr waged on Alamais in 2074. Less than twenty percent of the mercenaries survived this two-day battle, and the lyrics really drive home the despair and destruction of that battlefield. While the metaphors talk about 'The Beast and its pack' versus 'The King and his men', everyone knows exactly what "Death of the Beast" is really about.

Rumors

Ido values his privacy, and needless to say, that simply means more rumours. In fact there are so many rumours about him, that it's clear many of these are red herrings, spread to make it impossible to find out the truth. Some of us have helped with a lot of these, including all the rumours about his romantic partners. This helped Ido cover up his unofficial marriage to his life-partner, a Dwarf who is in his fourties. That's all we'll tell you about him, because we respect his privacy.   Some theorised that Ido was a Shadowrunner since the very start of his career. Due to various details in the 'Hunger of the Beast' album, this theory gained many more believers. In reality, we at the Helix can confirm to you that Ido is not, I repeat NOT, a Shadowrunner. However, his husband and three of his sisters are/were, and he also is friends with over a dozen other Shadowrunners. He has used many of their stories as inspiration for his songs, but only with consent. And yes, that includes the story from when Lofwyr went to war with Alamais. Out of respect for their privacy, we won't mention his source, but the album hit home with good reason.

Klink inderdaad als een hartendief :p Leuk perspectief om te lezen, vooral de uitleg rond de rumors. Ik vraag me wel af of hij enkel in het Engels zingt of ook in het Nederlands?

Feel free to check my new world Terra Occidentalis if you want to see what I am up to!

I actually ended up leaving that detail out! My initial draft said he sings in English when it comes to more generic stuff, and does some really personal stuff in Dutch.

Cool article. I like the emphasis that he is not a Shedowrunner ... makes me think " .... or is he?"

XD He's not, but if you mess with him, his sisters will send a bunch of runner friends after you.

Nice article! I'm guessing a shadowrunner is a kind of mercenary? I'm not familiar at all with that setting XD I love that he takes inspiration from his family's jobs and sown stories and that everyone just get super confused about it and start rumours XD WAs there people unhappy about him revealing some info about those missions in his songs?

Yeah Shadowrunners are deniable assets hired by corps, governments, criminals, even normal citizens at times. There's been a few grumpy people, but he makes sure to censor enough.

I really like the detail you've put in to describing his discography, and his motivations behind the music. Thanks for clarifying about Shadowrunners on Amélie's comment below because I was going to ask :).   Nice work :)

It's that Discography that gave me the spark for this character, glad it turned out nicely.

I think it's a good way to start thinking about a Bard, to be honest :) the interplay of the person and the music is so essential for artistic characters.

Good job! i especially liked the inspiration behind his music, and the fact he manages to have a happy private life with his husband.

The Helix takes privacy relatively seriously, at least when it doesn't involve details people should know for their own safety. They'll tell you all about who can be trusted and who they work for, but they're not paparazzi. In fact you can hire several members to counter paparazzi.

The article deserves a like already because it is a Shadowrun bard.   No, a, nice, small, very Shadowrun fitting article that also fits well with Shadowrun publications in terms of style. Even cooler would have been just one or two of these typical comments.   I especially like the passages about the publications and the rumours. I can imagine that the experience of the fight there was very traumatic. In that sense, thank you very much.

Shadowtalk, yeah, I considered it but didn't get inspiration so decided to leave it. Still need to figure out a nice Shadowtalk format too, for layouts.

I like Ido for the enigmatic soul he is. You mention Shadowrunners quite often, but I haven't found any tooltips with a description. Are these the people who circumvent the surveillance system?   There are a lot of interesting loose ends, which I would love to read more about, and which are connected to the lore, e.g., Augmented, Awakened. Would you say he is trying to change the world surrounding him with his music and songs? Or is that something he simply throws into the ether without any hope?

Ah yeah, I didn't tooltip the terms that are basically an essential part of Shadowrun. I do have a Setting Primer which covers some of these, but short version:

  • Shadowrunners are criminals that almost everyone hires as deniable assets
  • Augmented means having implants, cyberware/bioware, which enhances you. From metal muscles to a biological adjustment that makes you sleep better.
  • Awakened are those that have developed a form of magical ability. This can be physical self-buffs, spellcasting, or summoning spirits.
  • As for Ido, he definitely is trying to show the despair to make people realise why they should be better.

My favourite little detail from this article is the way his mother attends all his performances. That made my heart happy.   Really interesting character! :)

Let's see if I ever manage to work him (or one of his siblings) into a Shadowrun. And yeah, there's just something nice about an Ork lady in her sixties that shows up and sits in the audience with a big proud smile.

Creating an album featuring Lofwyr takes serious nerve - though I assume the big Lizard may actually take a liking to having his victory immortalized. I get the feeling that Ido has some kind of cult status in the Shadowrunner community, though the more professional segment will probably roll their eyes. I love how the tone of the article matches the style of shadow matrix articles; some sassy Runner quotes would also have fit very well in here! I love Shadowrun, and I think you caught the vibe of the world very well here. Good job.

If you have some time, I would much appreciate your feedback on my entry for Adventure April: Carbon Copy Paradise

Being called King definitely will have helped sway Lofwyr's decision in Ido's favour. I lacked inspiration for Shadowtalk, but glad the tone matched nicely.

I like that Ido is such a private individual despite his fame

There's a lot of actors and artists that keep their personal life private, which helped inspire that aspect of him, but in a Cyberpunk society that is significantly harder to do. Hence the '... let's hire people to spread false stories, so that the truth is buried'.

You did a wonderful job on your bard. It reads almost like a listing from a "top artists of _____" article. Giving enough information for us to know Ido as a character, but still leaving room open for you to explore them further if you want to.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.
