Typhon Munitions Coverage-S9
Written by: Ripshot
It's been a few years since Typhon released the Insurance-S1, a cute little holdout that had each shot encased in a single use, polymer barrel you'd replace after every shot. It's overall sold middlingly-to-poor for a lot of reasons, mostly to do with it being single-shot, but both the plastic housing and cartridge/barrel were so cheap to manufacture that Typhon were still making mad bank despite selling these things so cheap. Now it looks like they're trying to improve on the idea by releasing the Coverage-S9, a 'premium' iteration of the Insurance looking to appeal more to gun owners that have some more time and money to burn. Like the Insurance, the Coverage stuffs its cartridges in a disposable polymer barrel that you discard and replace after it's been spent, but it differs in two major ways: The first is that the Coverage trades off some of the Insurance's mad grain-count to load a whole nine rounds into its sealed barrel assembly, using some chemical sorcery to impart spin on the frontmost shots as if they'd gone through a few inches of rifling. The second is that they've upgraded receiver from a dinky plastic battery-holder to a full-sized and pretty whiz receiver, with a full electronics-package stuffed into the grip and even a few little actuated servos to push out empty barrels when you're ready to reload. You're paying more, sure, but you're also getting more.My favourite thing about the Coverage is the extended 18-shot barrel. It's made for pistol-caliber carbine kits, but I've seen people at the range carrying and firing it like a comically large pistol.
This thing's the epitome of overdesigned. Why all this cutting-edge electronics and fire-control software for a disposable barrel piece? Might as well stick a thousand nuyen scope on a flamethrower.
A lot of this gun's design schema is less about 'why' and more 'why not'. I'd wager that Typhon didn't want their older clients to feel alienated from the company's expanded target-demographic, so they occasionally threw out a 'premium' gun full of bells and whistles to keep them sated with something more exclusive. As for getting your hands on these things, it's a mixed bag: The receiver's being hocked out of select stores in Raleigh right now, but a few enterprising gunsmiths are cranking out homemade ones that seem to work just as well as the real deal. The difficult thing is the ammo: So far, nobody but Typhon can reliably manufacture the fancy sealed barrel-magazines - at least, not as cheaply as Typhon can - and the barrels just aren't made to handle being reused. I'd honestly just wait for some more of the things to fall into black market hands, or just buy legal if you know a place that doesn't ask questions.
