How to convince a flower to carry a message for you
Of all the communication methods existent in our world, the only way to send a message that works in every known place, is a flower letter; and unlike most of the messaging systems we use, this isn't a magically induced manifestation, or even the result of exposing nice shards to the influence of people in need of communication.
The Witnesses are natural ghosts that grow all over the forest but can be safely carried to any place you may need them. If you are lucky, you may even find one that survives the haunted houses.
It sounds like a dream come true, doesn't it?
Well, it doesn't come true without effort. This creatures don't carry just any message, you have to convince them of the importance of the task for them to take that responsibility, and for a long time, we didn't know exactly how that happened. Sometimes they would just carry a message without any apparent reason, sometimes, they would ignore you no matter what you offered or explain.
Now we understand that the witnesses are as generous as lazy, and they will stay on their roots unless they really like a person or see that someone is in real danger. How they measure danger, is always complicated when it comes to other species, but some of them are willing to believe you if you direct that thought towards them, or they may be able to understand that you are scared or in a hurry.
If your issue is real, just let your self think of it as you keep in mind that the flower is right here with you. They will understand and carry the information you need to be carried, right into the person you want to receive it.
Befriending one or more of them is completely different matter. Each of them will like you (or not) for different reasons and it may take more or less time. Not many have the patience to do so, and those who try are usually trying to hard, doing their best to show the side that they think will gain the witness trust, but the flower may take it for dishonesty.
Discovery
It all started with an unlucky journey, back in the days before the company's time loop. The explorers were lost and badly hurt. Some were sick and something was hunting them, though they may have got themselves in an even worse situation because the predator hadn't dare to follow them into this labyrinth of rock they had ended in without even noticing. None of their communication devices worked and they were far from the planned route. That meant that even if their disappearance had been noticed already, any search party would be looking in the wrong place. They didn't know how they had ended up here, therefor they didn't know how to come back. No dangers seem to loom over them, other than their poor health and thirst. They studied the few plants that grew there, including those delicate flowers that they had often seen (and ignored) in the forest. It was an accident, the first (maybe second) fortunate event so far, that one of them somehow convinced one of the witnesses to disappear from the wall where it was happily growing, to reappear in a vase on the security administrator's table. As soon as he looked at it with curiosity, he could envision what she had just seen at the labyrinth, and the path they had followed without paying mind to it. It didn't matter that they hadn't recognized anything, the path was on their memories. Of course, that information was not what was used to rescue them, because they also understood that there was no safe way to walk into the labyrinth. The granter reset the time instead. One of many times when that was inconvenient but necessary.Social Impact
With all the variety of communication systems that are easier to obtain for most people, this type of "letter" only affected the communication of those who worked with delicate information or often explored the most dangerous and isolated areas in the premises.
Specially at the time when it was discovered, it saved the lives of many explorers.
