Threntis Scorpions
Goes without saying: this article is a big spoiler for that book I was writing. The Traveller tells the story of Altair's arrival on Sharitarn and his first adventures on the Planet Cursed by the Vortex, Threntis's scorpions play a very significant role in this story, and does Threntis himself.
Sharitarn was first shaped to serve as setting for Altair's adventures. (but I am lazy, and the story has been sitting for months, waiting for a much necessary revision. And closing chapters)
Write about a dangerous insect or animal in your world.
Those red and black translucent scorpions are natural, in the same way Apollo III and napalm are. They are a product of intelligent deliberation, and advanced technique.
The fact that they are not product of science in the sense the Mage's Brotherhood understands the expression is likely a flaw in the mage's understanding of reality. Similar argument can be made about all sub-species of humans from Rhalpav, and about many other cases. Perhaps it should, at least in the case of this scorpions.
Those animals are hardly twice bigger than a human fingernail. Their poison is painful, but most adult humans survive the sting and recover after a couple of weeks in coma, if treated properly.
Death is certain for those treated by magic, however.
The insect founders of Ziicrix have conceived those small arachnid monsters during their brief war against the Brotherhood, and their faithful followers developed the idea using magic and the living products left by Ziicrix Founders. Either for arrogance or for moral imperative the mages allowed their insect enemies to live, paralyzed in a prison in the middle of their city. There is always hope that a new generation on human mages may decide to free them, and give the timeless insects another chance to follow the Exclusion Law and build a home at Sharitarn for themselves. However, the followers of those large insects are not holding their breaths while they wait.
They plan overthrow humanity, by any means. Establish a Time of Insects that will replace the Ages of Men.
They must make their on mages and archmages before that can happen, so they can free the Founders of Ziicrix from their prison. To reach that goal, and advance from it to supremacy the insects know they will have to kill a lot of mages, and endure the retribution of many others. So they secretly developed the ultimate anti-magic weapon.
The scorpion poison kills archmages, mages, sigraxes and even mere alchemists. It is more painful the more magical power a victim has. However, death isn't fast.
Even a large number of scorpions will not kill a person who has magic potential awaken immediately. In contact whit those individuals the monster eat their way inside the body, and slide to the magical body as well, in a process excruciating that lasts days.
During this time of extreme suffering all will is consumed, and the host of arachnids stays in a very cooperative state of mind. Answering any question they are made, and begin to die.
The original host of those creatures was Threntis, and human created by the Founders of Ziicrix in a lab on their Home Universe. Threntis was not born, or even cultivated from embryos, he was "printed" molecule by molecule following an improved human paradigm conceived by the giant insects or eight brains. He is was the experimental success of this technique that didn't had time to be replicated in his original Universe.
With the animals developed in his body, mixed with his genetic code and magic potential at same time, Threntis does not suffers from their presence. He will never have hope to became a magical user, but the poisonous blood running in his veins gives him a unique and considerable advantage. The insect's spawn is immune to magic.
Not just highly resistant to it, like a considerable number of large predators on Sharitarn. He is totally immune.
Fortunately for Sharitarn the scorpions are carefully contained by the forces of Ziicrix. They have no desire to attract attention to themselves, or to their powerful weapon too soon.
Time will come.
Basic Information
Anatomy
All para-spectral beings exist in the border between spectral and common physical state. Some are solid most the time, and only slide to spectral state when they want to pass a solid barrier to escape predators, or to hunt preys. Some are mostly spectral, and slide in the opposite direction for brief periods of time, for similar reasons. The scorpions are closer to the first group, but they are almost in the limit between the two categories.
Is all too common for those animals to look transparent, and walk through substances not protected against spectral penetration. And having the chance they gladly expend their existence inside magical bodies of mages and sigraxes, eating Xar and depositing their eggs in the physical body. Where they grow consuming blood and flesh, until mature enough to slide into the magical body themselves.
On the other hand, the animals can live in solid world. They need magical bodies to reproduce, but usually the mages and sigraxes that serve to that process die in a couple of weeks, and the newborn scorpions eat the physical body completely before walk away in the physical world where they live a long happy life looking for another magic user to infest. Adult scorpions leave the host as soon as it dies, allowing their offspring to develop without competition.
If the host don't die when he should, as happens with Threntis, then the adults never leave, and end up eating most their young. Threntis prevent that infanticide by having most scorpion eggs extracted from his body and sent to Ziicrix where the Insects can cultivate the scorpions in good time, as circumstances demand.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
The main difference between this scorpions and those we know and love here on Earth is their capacity of feel the spectral environment. Common earthling cats do that, but not as well as spectral-animals.
Threntis Scorpions are also very sensible to magical energy of depurated Xar, which are left by magic users such as sigraxes and mages. They are attracted by those energies from kilometers of distance.
Except for those details, those are common scorpions. Neither smarter nor more perceptive than Earthling sub-species.
Scientific Name
para-spectral, animal, invertebrate, arachnid, scorpion, anti-magical.
Conservation Status
Those vicious monsters are well conserved in suspense animation inside barrels hidden inside and bellow Ziicrix. They are hard to find with Divination Magic, and because to that Insect City has endured the risk of keep them in their hands. Knowing that human mages could see in those small monsters enough reason to purge Insect City all all its inhabitants from existence.
Decades ago the insects moved Threntis and his select band of true believers to the wilds, and they created a reputation as lawless mercenaries. Whit the Three Faced War approaching a portion of those scorpions are being smuggled to Shirshan in order to be used against the local forces on the city.
The animals can survive for a decade in nature, and they last for millennia in the barrels, but they cannot reproduce that way. They only reproduce inside the body (physical and magical) of magic users. Threntis being the only one who survives in good health as a host. All others die after weeks, or in the best case months.
In any case, the animals are connected whit the fake lawless chief. Their anti-magic poison becomes weaker after a few dozen generations growing in different hosts. Those who came direct from the artificial paragon human are stronger and more poisonous than the rest.

I love the intricate descriptions and history sprinkled throughout the entire article, it makes it feel quite believable. Though, if i may suggest, you should and some titles and sections to make the article a touch more readable. Great content though!
Thanks Avalon Arcana. I will try to elaborate a bit more the text. Ad some side notes perhaps.
