Research & Development
At R&D, discovery and innovation is the name of the game. These scientists and researchers are the brilliant minds who are always looking for the next horizon or the next discovery. These are the people who wish to comb over every new plant, animal, bacterium, mineral, and/or virus for a peek into understanding and categorizing the make-up of Auberon. Innovation in both biological and technological spheres, of course, is considered to be the natural extension of research. It is also suspected, but never confirmed, that strange happenings in the colony can be traced back to R&D… That’s just rumour and paranoia though.
To grasp how R&D functions on a daily basis, we need to first understand the Head of R&D’s management style (if that is what you’d like to call it). Anastasia Witheringham is the resigned, anxious wreck of a mother to R&D’s wild, out-of-control children passing as researchers. Among other Departments, it is said that Anastasia’s hair greys a little more with each breakthrough her Department manages to make due to the sheer stress of her colleagues “enthusiasm” for the work.
Research and Development may be seen as one large playground, where the kids allowed in are given the latest, flashiest toys to play with. Toys that would not pass any form of security check, and often blow up in their faces or threaten to take over the lab. R&D is often lightyears ahead of the rest of Sanctuary when it comes to their gear, and the one reason it stays (somewhat) contained to their offices at Hospital Campus is because of Maintenance & Engineering’s strict assurance that the chaos does not leak any further.
As they are at the forefront of the scientific discoveries in Sanctuary, there is an undercurrent of belief that runs through the department that they, and they alone, can solve every problem that Sanctuary faces through science. Some in the department might even say that they are the most important department in the colony.
Suffice to say, this is not an opinion shared by the rest of Sanctuary.
