Island Enari

I don't understand how anyone can live out there on that rock. Why can't they just move back to the mainland where it's possible to grow anything at all?

Maybe the hardiest of the enari people, the island enari are a small group of people who live out on a tiny island just off the northern coast of Enarion. Numbering to somewhere around fifty individuals, and living on maybe the most inhospitable inhabited island of Shireon, these islanders live a tough life among the waves.

It Ain't Much, But It's Home

Everyone who aren't from this tiny island wonders why anyone would live out here without being forced to. There's extremely little arable land, so the main food source is fish and caught seabirds. Catching enough food is a struggle, especially during the numerous storms that wreaks havoc on the area.

But the islanders couldn't imagine living anywhere else. This is their home, and their ancestors made this island their home. It's a matter of pride for them by now, surviving out in the sea like their parents and grandparents did.

A Hardy People

There's a stark difference between the island enari and the enari from the mainland. Where the people of the Kael Thalori and the Northern Grasslands have a culture of openness and many words, an island enari is dead silent in comparison. They don't speak when no words are needed, and hardly chat with outsiders who for some reason visit the island. They will never complain, keeping their hardships and aches to themselves. If you ask them how they are, they will always answer something along the lines that things are all right.

Can't complain.

— Island enari about the life on the island

Where the children in Kael Thalori learn how to survive the forest, the island enari children learn how to survive the sea. They learn how to read nature to tell the weather, how to maneuvre a boat in the riskiest of waves, and how to fish for food and hunt for seabirds as early as they're able to. These are critical skills out here - without them, the island enari would risk their lives even more than they already do.

Cut Away From The Mainland

During the stormiest seasons it's impossible to get to the mainland to stock up on the supplies the islanders can't make themselves. There's a lot of things that need to be imported to the island. One of the things that is the most needed during the harsh storms, firewood, has to be shipped in from the mainland as no trees grow on the island.

It's critical to catch and preserve enough food before the storms make it impossible to catch enough food for the whole island. The surplus fish and bird meat is dried or preserved in a rather similar way to vruki, so it can last for months without going bad.

I love the difference between island enari and mainland enari due to the differences in their lifestyle. They sound like a really interesting people.
