Perfuga

Definition

Perfuga is the name given to a person in Therium who can perform magic above the age of thirteen who is not registered in the Codex Arcanum.

Public Opinion

Due to the regulation of magic in Therium, Perfuga are seen as "deserters", their rightful place being in one of the Arcane Academies. It is the job of the Tutors to travel the kingdom and bring any mage who has not been registered in the Codex. While Perfuga are not inherently criminals, any attempts by one to evade capture or otherwise attack a Tutor attempting to perform their duty will label them as one. Tutors will use force, if necessary, to bring a Perfuga to the nearest Arcane Academy, where they must remain until they complete the Rite of Graduation.   Not everyone in Therium agree to the regulation of magic in Therium. Many citizens, and even guards, are lax about the law, often not asking for proof of graduation or registration in the Codex (usually an Ornamentum Magus). Others will, upon seeing magic performed, ask for proof, reporting any unregistered person to the nearest guard or Tutor if one is nearby enough. In general, most Perfuga are careful about performing magic in public, as it's unsure who they might be able to trust with such information.
