Codex Arcanum

The Codex Arcanum is a magical database monitored and kept by the Royal Family of Therium and Tutors. It holds the name of all living mages and student mages in Therium.

History

The Codex Arcanum was first created shortly after the death of Cyn, when magic started to become more regulated in Therium. Little is known about the mage who originally created it. However, since its inception, the Codex Arcanum has been strictly maintained.

Description

Few have seen the original Codex Arcanum. Even fewer even know where the magical artifact resides. However, many copies have been made, and they're all magically connected; any edits made to a copy will be copied over to other versions and the original. Each Tutor is given a copy to help them perform their task. These copies appear to be magical tomes bound in black leather. Golden runes in an ancient language cover both covers. Despite being a normal-sized tome that can be carried or hung at the waist, when opened, the number of pages seems endless. Each page is divided into two columns of names, alphabetically. The names are written in a glistening ink that corresponds with what Arcane Academy the mage attended: green for the Academy in Acum, red for the Academy in Acrum, blue for the Academy in Gegium, gold for the Academy in Lontium, and black for a foreign mage (no matter what Academy they passed the Rite of Graduation at). A new name is recorded at the end of the list; when the Codex is closed and opened again, the name will be put in its proper spot alphabetically.

Usage

The Codex Arcanum is used as a list of all living mages within Therium. When a student is enrolled in an Arcane Academies, their name is recorded in the Codex Arcanum. Additionally, any mages foreign to Therium that intend to stay in the kingdom for extended periods of time must register their name in the Codex Arcanum as well as pass the Rite of Graduation.   The Tutors are able to use the Codex Arcanum to determine if a mage is a Perfuga - someone over the age of thirteen who has not been registered in the Codex Arcanum (and has thus not passed the Rite of Graduation). It is said that the original Codex Arcanum has other extraordinary magical uses, but those have since been lost to time.
