Doji Sachiko
Even as a very small child, Doji Sachiko was always passionate about etiquette. Doji children can often be seen playing at tea ceremony or imagining court scenes with intricate rules (and wildly varying degrees of accuracy), but little Kiki took things a step farther than most. She could tie an obi five different ways before she even entered the Doji academy at the age of seven.
Her love of beauty and order led her naturally into tea ceremony. She was always in the tea room, carefully lining things up, dusting, and occasionally reorganizing. At first, the old tea master assumed she was there to steal sweets, so he handed her a piece of mochi and shooed her away.
"I know you are not prepared for guests, sensei, but may I please have a small bowl of tea to go with my sweet?" she asked as she accepted the napkin.
"Of course, child," he replied with surprise. "Please, be seated in the tea room. I will join you in a moment. A true tea master is never unprepared to offer hospitality." He did not keep her waiting long. He performed a simple tea ceremony, suitable for intimate friends, and watched her closely. She sat very still, hands in her lap, her knees exactly 16 mei inside her tatami. The sweet sat on the napkin in front of her, untouched until the tea master invited her to eat it.
He offered no advice, waiting to see what she would do. The little golden-haired child performed admirably. After he closed the ceremony, she politely asked to see the tea jar and scoop, which surprised him. As he was purifying the jar, he asked, "Your mother is Doji Akari, is she not? I am surprised to see that she started teaching you the way of tea so soon."
"My mother has taught me many things about etiquette and courtesy, but says I am still too young to practice tea. Did I do it right?" A flicker of apprehension crossed her big round eyes.
From that day forward, Kiki studied tea with Master Yasu. She started teaching classes as a senior student when she was only 14.
Doji Sachiko was 18 when a member of the Daidoji Trading Council approached her with an offer to open a tea house in the west. They assured her that she would be quite safe in Heiwa Toshi, but that they would be sending a Kakita duelist as a bodyguard in the unlikely event that she needed greater protection than her name and station could provide.
