The Dovmindunder
Dovmindunder, which roughly translates to “the road under the deepest dark” in the dwarven language, is a broad layer of caves and tunnels that honeycomb underneath the surface of the Sjonderwold. Most caves and bottomless crevices eventually connect to the Dovmindunder, so there are occasional hapless human intrusions.
Humans in the Dovmindunder have very little hope of returning to the surface, as even if they survive the fall they must also contend with the terrible monsters that jealously guard their subterranean lairs, not the least of which are the dwarves themselves.
The dwarves widened and shaped the Dovmindunder to fit their purposes, building roads, ferries, and vast boulevards connecting most if not all of the dwarf-holds. No single dwarf can claim to know all the twisting passages and caverns of the Dovmindunder, and so no single dwarven ruler can claim it as their dominion.
Still, it benefits all the dwarf-holds to keep the Dovmindunder in good repair, as it was used to transport goods, troops, and even entire towns around the Sjonderwold.
