Wailing Wolves
Wailing wolves are large canid like mammals with fur similar to steel. They range from 40-48 inches tall (101.6-121.92 centimeters) and 96-100.8 inches (243.84-256.032 centimeters) in length. They are dark in color; mainly shades of grey, black, and brown.
Their fur is made up of three layers: the undercoat, awn hair, and guard hair. Wailing wolf down is very soft and insulating. These properties along with the rarity cause it to be highly valuable. Awn hair is made of a mineral similar to rock. The guard hair has spines that are made of the local ore. Awn and Guard hair are not reflective for better camouflage. Pups have only the undercoat. The awn hair and guard hair is generally grown during adolescence.
They live in mountainous or rocky areas. With areas that are rich in minerals and ore being their preference. In the past Wailing Wolves had a broad range across Confederate and _ lands. Due to increased mining and excavation efforts, their population has declined. The destruction of their natural habitat has caused them to migrate to other areas. Wailing Wolves run in small packs of 3-8 wolves. The largest pack ever discovered had 10. This was in a region with sizable aerofauna around.
Rattle wolves are omnivores though they favor meat. They prey on Bovyox, smaller sized wyverns, and what ever they can scavenge. Wailing Wolves hunt in packs to bring down aerofauna and larger prey. They also eat rocks, ores, and minerals to be able to form the outer layer of their spines.
When warning other creatures away, their spines bristle and spike out. It makes Wailing Wolves appear larger to potential threats. The rattle of the spines against each other produces a terrible metallic shriek. This shriek is where the animal gets its name from.
The haunting shrieks the wolves produce has caused them to be viewed in a mostly negative light. Local tales say they roam the boundaries of life and death. That these sounds are the screams of doomed souls. Souls who had wandered too far and entered the realm of death.
