The Week of Total Nightfall
Breakthrough on historical events - Week of Total Nightfall, Midsummer special
Written by Monica Peterson The Week of Total Nightfall is an event that occurred every fifty years since the beginning of the Skydwellers, spanning the first five Ages and stopping after the Ashes War. During this week, the sunlight was dimmed to nothing more than moonlight, and the moon and the stars could have vanished, for all the light they gave. Always during Midsummer, and always for exactly seven days. Though many scientists have studied this phenomenon, no one can quite explain its cause or significance. Many Skydweller religions likely had their own explanations for why this event occurred, but they have since been lost to time. However, it doesn't seem like this was something that they had superstitions about, and many of them trusted in the spirits of light to guide them safely during this week. The month before would always see much prep - gathering firewood and lanterns, growing bioluminescent vines and fungi around one's house and garden, and storing up on food and water for the long week. This phenomenon continues to baffle modern scientists, and even more frustrating is the fact that it no longer happens. Why did it stop? Why did it happen in the first place? Most believe that it had something to do with the patterns of the stars. Research on the subject is extremely difficult, as many religious records, historical recordings, and first-hand accounts have been lost to the folds of time. Strangely, one of the journal entries of the time that has managed to be salvaged describes the palace of one of the Kingdoms glowing like a beacon during this time. Currently, a team of historians and scientists from Noblelore and Bluerain are attempting to learn more about the event. Their head, Laura Rainwing, is delighted to share a breakthrough that they have recently had. "We've recently uncovered an old journal that seems dedicated to recording as much about the Week of Total Darkness as possible. However, many of the pages had been burnt, torn, faded, smudged, or waterlogged, and this is what we are left with. They are in the process of being restored." Rainwing has also said that "As we study this, we believe that the secret to unlocking the cause of the darkness lies with some of the royal families of the time." Unfortunately, little is known about these kingdoms, and it may be quite a while until more is discovered.

"It was my first...the Week of Total Nightfall. I have...I was rather excited - I had...to record all that I could of the week to...study it more thoroughly. Enclosed are detailed account of the sky, our routines, ...and...sketches.
"And it was glowing - the windows shining with...light. No one else...see it. I still...and he said....charging."
