Esther Lambert
Esther Lambert- Stanton
A wealthy widow and previous head of the Friends of Belleview Library Society. Esther's listening skills make her agreeable to be around most of the time; she will, however, surprise anyone who assumes that because of this she has no backbone. Because of past interactions with them, Esther tends to be cautious and closed around the Eldritch Anomalies Department (EAD), though verbal spats aren't uncommon.
Marriage to Arthur Lambert
At the time Esther Stanton, Esther met Arthur Lambert while vacationing at Malbury Lake with her family. Arthur was charismatic, but comfortable with being introverted. He and Esther shared a love of books and learning. Esther enjoyed Arthur's satirical commentary on lake shore life. If he had a certain amount of arrogance, he still maintained friendly relations with both Esther and her family despite the new money that had allowed them to enter high society, something Esther appreciated about him. That same arrogance, however, drove Arthur deep into studies of the eldritch after their marriage. Arthur's family legacy was riddled with encounters with the eldritch; while Arthur had always shown disdain for the activities of his ancestors, he soon sought to exceed them. He appreciated Esther for her listening skills and quick intelligence, but soon this became simply a way to mirror his own thoughts and exploits. He involved her in augury experiments without explaining the corrupt nature of them, and ignored her attempts to redirect his talents. This progressed into hostility and coercion until his violent death in 1908.After Arthur's Death
Esther was subjected to a thorough investigation following the death of Arthur. She retains an intense dislike of the new EAD director, Marcus Compton. After observation by the EAD and a brief rest period at her family home, Esther came back to claim the Lambert manor, which was being contested by members of Arthur's extended family. Arthur's brother Dean Lambert in particular clashed with Esther over what should be done with the manor. The court ruled that Esther kept the house and Dean kept the grounds and the county responsibilities, with the expectation that the manor revert back to his family line upon Esther's death. During and after her marriage to Arthur, Esther volunteered regularly at the local Belleview Library as part of the Friends of the Belleview Library society. Her skills soon made her an invaluable asset to the society, which was a refuge for her during the tumultuous time. She became head of the society before Arthur's death, and returned to as a volunteer after her stay with her family. The Friends of the Belleview Library society have been hesitant to set her back at the head, though still value her skills.Augury
Esther’s approach to augury is practical - she works with a variety of relics and instruments that she has proven in their effectiveness. She had to learn on her feet when living with Arthur Lambert and then explored the mathematical theory of augury with her friend Sylvia Warison. She does not have an official license. Esther views automatons as protections that could easily go wrong. She does not really trust them and has more confidence in her own abilities and Sylvia's. At best, their presence is a constant reminder of the eldritch.Personality Characteristics
