In some iterations, the delivery and dialogue are more witty and comedic, but in others, it is more serious and emotional. It really depends on the version and the director. In most cases, including the source material, it is a mixture of both.
Plot
The plot is broken down into three acts, with each act having a different setting.Act one
Osh Tanrum meets Zelia Jemen while strolling the gardens at the party quickly starting a romance with each other. Both Osh and Zelia are young people from aristocratic families, however, Osh’s family makes their wealth off of mines but all of their mines had recently dried up and the family fell on hard times. With Zelina’s family being more affluent than Osh’s, her parents would never allow the relationship. At the end of the first act, it is revealed that Zelina’s parents have arranged for her to marry the son of an affluent family, Larsh Tratna. Act one is set in the flower gardens of the Jemen family home during a large house party.Act two
Act Two starts with the couple being distraught as they can no longer be together due to the engagement and Zelina’s parents, specifically her father, are keeping her away from Osh due to their suspicions about the couple. But the couple manages to sneak letters to each other. At the end of act two, Osh sneaks into Zelina’s house and the couple confesses their love for each other. Larsh, who had been visiting Zelina’s family, overhears this and is enraged outing the couple to Zelina’s parents and breaking off the engagement. Act two is set in the main living area of the Jemen Family home and is set a few days or weeks after the first act. Much of the first part of the act is told through conversations between Zelina and her maid, Sinzi with the plot becoming more active as more characters join the scene.Act three
Zelina’s parents are enraged and confine Zelina to her room, under guard, and attempt to reinstate the engagement with Larsh and his family. Zelina is depressed by this and is pinning on Osh, even going so far as to threaten suicide. Sinzi talks her down and helps her Osh sneak into the house. After Osh meets up the couple spends the night together. Zelina’s parents catch a couple and are upset, thinking their daughter's future is ruined. The couple gives the parents the option to let them get married, and the parents agree with the exemption that Osh becomes successful. Osh, just as he was agonizing over this gets news that the family mines have struck gold and his family is now wealthy again and the couple gets officially engaged and lives happily ever after. Act three is set in the Jemen family home, specifically inside Zelina’s living chambers. The first part of the act is again shown through conversations between Zelina and Sinzi and again gets more lively as more characters enter the scene.
