Clockwork Being
The pinnacle of clockwork science is often said to be the creation of a clockwork being, a living thinking being made of clockwork parts. While some clockwork beings are little more than mechanical animals, many are fully sapient and capable of independent thought. Their bodies are often gifted with certain tools that makes some jobs easier than others and clockwork beings will often gravitate towards such jobs, though it is not unheard for one to commission major alterations to compliment personal development.
As mechanical lifeforms, clockwork beings do not suffer many of the fragilites of organic life. Neither disease nor poison affects them, wear and tear is easily fixed through new parts and being animated by magic, they need not eat, drink or breathe. However, they do have a mind and so unlike mindless constructs, can have this manipulated. Another weakness they share with people is related to one of the greatest triumphs of greater clockworks. They never need to be rewound, their magic sustaining their movement, but this magic does require periods of recharging, a process that is very similar to sleep. As such, clockwork beings do require periods of rest and can suffer from negative effects if they do not.
This magical energy also gives them interesting options. Clockwork beings can choose to accelerate their internal mechanisms, lending themselves extra power and speed. This process does however generate tremendous heat. The materials used in their construction are resistant to heat, but even then there's limits from the buildup. Clockwork beings can vent the excess heat, but that is risky to anyone standing close. If the heat continues to build without release, it will cause considerable damage as the internals overload, ripping the body apart if they are particularly unlucky.
In battle, clockwork beings attack with calculated precision and relentless force. Their capacity for information gathering and analysis means they can efficiently gauge an opponent and their actions, before compiling a counter-strategy.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The body of a clockwork being is limited only by the skills of their creator or of the being itself, should it have the talents required. They are mostly composed of metals, their innards a mixture of springs, gears, weight, magic wires and engraved plates that allows them to move their body. The most important part of their body is the soul gear, an inscribed disk that contains not only the complex magical enchantment that gives rise to the being's consciousness, but also stores all of its memories. As long as that disk survives, the being essentially survives and can be placed in a new body. If it is destroyed, however, the clockwork being is truly dead. As such, it is the most well-protected part of the body. To prevent their overdrive ability from melting them to slag, only heat resistant materials are used to make clockwork beings. As a result, fire has no effect on them.
Genetics and Reproduction
Clockwork beings are built, not born. If properly equipped, clockwork beings may engage in intercourse and may even be able to experience positive feedback from it, but it will be purely recreational. Some may however choose to learn the skills necessary to create a new clockwork being as a way to pass on a legacy. In these cases, the new clockwork being is generally considered to be the child of its creator, although the exact nature of this relationship is highly individualized.
Growth Rate & Stages
While clockwork beings do not grow organically, any additions to their body being a conscious choice of installation, they do grow as personalities. A newly created clockwork being may have a functional mind and may even have basic knowledge installed, but all of it lack nuanced context. Clockwork beings often start out with very rigid and clearly defined views, slowly expanding their horizons as they gain experiences and interact with people.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Clockwork beings usually prefer to organise for efficiency, arranging groups so that each member has an assigned part that fits their skillset. In this way, they mimic the very clockwork that allows them to function.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Clockwork beings are most commonly found in more urban and developed areas, where there's the technology necesarry to create them, but nothing stops them from wandering.
Average Intelligence
Clockwork beings demonstrate a high capacity to calculate, analyze and remember. Emotion, empathy and similar are usually stunted for the first couple of years as they grow into personhood.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Clockwork beings can have any number of sensory arrays, most of which will be of superior quality when comorer to that of a human.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Clockwork names tend to take inspiration from the civilization that birthed them.
Gender Ideals
Clockwork beings do not have biological sexes, although they may individually identify as a gender if they find one they feel fits.
Average Technological Level
As a creation of technology themselves, clockwork beings usually have a pretty good grasp on technology. And with their ability to perfectly memorise facts and calculate things precisely, what they don't know they can easily learn.
