Radande

The tree-like radande are stalwart guardians of the woodlands, jungles and other such areas. They are a patient people, prone to taking the long view and pondering problems from all possible sides. Most times, radande seem like they operate in an entirely different time scale, which is not surprising considering that they can live through the passing of entire eras. However, if swift response seems required, then the radande will act quickly.   In combat, radande tend to be defensive, waiting for enemies to attack first and then striking back. Their tough bark and innate healing allows them to outlast most attacks, at which point they will respond in kind with powerful blows.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Randande are tall beings, their trunk being the primary part of their body, a thick shaft covered in bark. From the bottom grows thick, knotted clusters of roots that allows for locomotion. Thick, knotted branches stretch out to form limbs for manipulation. And above branches out their leafy crown, under which their sensory organs lie. Randande don't process pain like many other creatures do. While they can feel harm, it is not as debilitating to them. They also sleep very little. Their thick hide protects them from penetrative or blunt weapons, though sharp ones, like an axe, can get through this. They are also vulnerable to fire. Radande have inherent healing magic, though in barely works on anything that isn't a plant. This is used not only to care for their arboreal homes, but also to fill each other with vitality in a process called overgrowth, which temporarily empowers radande. While most groups of radande have common characteristics, they have a strong propensity for developing unique talents or abilities.

Genetics and Reproduction

Radande reproduce by releasing pollen. This can be transmitted to other radande either via wind, symbiotic insects or rubbing their crown together, the sensation of which is pleasing according to themselves. Five to ten seeds then grow on their branches, which are carefully planted. Roughly a third of them might sprout into a radande.

Growth Rate & Stages

Radande grow slowly. For the first ten or so years, they are immobile. From age ten to thirty, they slowly grow, gaining limbs and height. A radande is usually fully grown about seventy years, though some larger species take even longer.

Ecology and Habitats

Radande are most at home in forests. Here, they tend to the native wildlife, with a heavy focus on the trees. Forests with populations of radande tend to be healthier overall.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Radande get a lot of nutrition from the light of the world hearts and the ground. If not doing a lot, they can in fact subsist entirely off this. However, active radande require more food, which usually comes in the form of fallen fruit or piles of leaves, which are shoved into their mouth to compost inside them.
