Traudira

The name Traudira means “dark daughter” and refers to the cluster of large islands off the north-western coast of the southern continent. Most of this region is covered with dense tropical rainforest, fed by major jungle rivers. Originally colonized by the Thrau, it was the home of a far-reaching empire throughout The Age of Epiphany. It is also the area of greatest concentration of Saurians in later ages.

Fauna & Flora

Bauwood: This bare-barked tree, found on the southern continent, yields a dark purple-toned wood with a unique elastic quality. While it may be cut as any other wood, it is particularly resistant to breakage by linear stress. When bent, the wood returns to its original shape; even under extreme bending and pressure. Bauwood is often used in making "spring-loaded" devices such as: snares, wagon springs, levers, etc. It can also used to make bows and ballistas of a +1 quality.   Stingbarb: This short ground-hugging shrub is a hardy and pernicious plant, found mainly on the southern continent. Considered a weed by many, the stingbarb bears narrow half-inch long thorns. Falling into a patch of stingbarb, or attempting to walk through, inflicts (2-12) damage, minus the character's armor adjustment. Ismani use the twigs and barbs as make-shift fishhooks.   Sumac: There are many varities of the common shrub known as the sumac found throughout world. The shrub has a thicket of branches and twigs that are long and flexible. When branches are broken they have an unpleasant aroma — which is why it is nicknamed the "skunk-bush." Ismani, Thrau and Gremen use the branches for basketry and hat-making, because the branches are strong and flexible. Twigs are used to make cradles, fishing tools, and decorations. Large stems are used to make bows. Dry sumac leaves, mixed with tobacco, can be used for smoking. The leaves are also used for ceremonial purposes. Some jungle tribes use burned sumac leaves during prayer as a symbol of protection.   Pillin: The pillin is a spindly branched bush, bearing flowers in small white-yellow clusters. The leaves of the bush are green in the summer and turn red-orange in the fall. The fruit of the pillin shrub are sticky, hairy berries that are red to orange in color. These berries are highly acidic, and have a smell similar to limes. Pillinberries are used as a tart flavoring for food and beverages. Mixed with grain meal, the berries are also eaten as a porridge, and used to make breads and cakes.   Qalipoth: This large-leaved tree is found mainly on the southern continent of Aerith. New leaves sprout with a purple color before turning green. In the spring, the qalipoth puts forth a host of white bell-shaped blossoms, which later turn into bean pods. These long thin bean pods are often eaten by tree-climbing animals. Superstition holds that when monkeys congregate in a qalipoth tree near a home, the person who lives there will experience a fortunate turn of events in the near future.
