Passengers aboard the Overland Limited's weekend journey from Chicago to San Francisco were shocked by a series of murders occurring aboard their train. Count Andrei Kacynski, a Polish aristocrat traveling through America, killed brothers Michael and Franklin Benson in a violent disagreement regarding the cross-country transport of several valuable items. A brave cowboy by the name of Dennis Pike stopped the Count's rampage in a shootout, though he succumbed to wounds received in the engagement not long after.
Alexander Stratton, a British doctor aboard the Overland Limited, said that the Count's victims died of 'exsanguination performed with surgical precision'. Two newlyweds, a Rev. Silas Harding and Bessie McIntosh, vowed to name their firstborn child after Mr. Pike after being saved thanks to his heroic actions.
