Surov
Holopedia Galactica entry:
The city of Surov was built atop the steep facade of a mighty fjord on the equatorial peninsula Bisera. It is once again on the path to becoming a truly a state-of-the-art display of wonder, as it was until shortly before the end of the Federal Era. Its deceptively fragile appearance is perfectly framed by the backdrop of an abundance of hills which have helped shape the city to what it is today.
The riches these hills brought were of great importance, but they were also influential when it came to architectural designs as the vast majority of buildings have been built in shapes and with elements of the hills around them. They seem to be rolling curves that should suffer from harsh weather or other turmoil; in fact, these buildings are specially designed to redirect storms and energy waves harmlessly into ancient moraines left during the last ice age.
As with so much of historic Tapani Sector construction, the cornerstone buildings of Surov's founding are built with two to three times as much functional space under the bedrock level as they have above -- although some of the skyscrapers managed this by building outward in a wide radius, anchoring the small buildings around them to the same subterranean understructure. Less usual for the Imperium is that early members of House Vorbanovich required all major designs to consider the nearby sea. Buildings above a certain volume are built to withstand several hypothetical events in which pieces of the city might break off the fjord itself. If the engineering performs as expected, the building should naturally revert to its upright position as the entire system floats on the sea.
Few adult citizens care to test it. Nearly every schoolchild, however, hopes for an adventure where their surroundings become floating islands.
Maintenance is inspected every three years, usually by experts from rival districts.
