Personal history
Astrid was born into the hyper-conservative and patriarchal society of the SS Korision. She grew up with the other unmarried female children in the Girls' Quarters until she started menstruating at the age of 12, at which point she was promptly married to a much older male member of the community.
Astrid was not as passive or as submissive as her upbringing wanted her to be, and she created so much trouble for her husband that he soon abandoned her and she was subsequently married off to increasingly worse and more terrible community elders, all of whom ended up abandoning her as well. By the time she was 15, Astrid had been married and abandoned four times.
Shortly after the end of this fourth "marriage," Astrid was killed by the elders of the SS Korision in an event that was shared with the rest of the community as a "tragic but ultimately fortuitous accident," and per the belief system of the Korisionites, it was seen as Astrid was being taken back into the forces of creation so that her soul could be remade into someone more dutiful and less disturbed before ultimately being returned via rebirth.
The night before Astrid's murder, however, she snuck back into the Girls' Quarters and bid farewell to her one and only friend, 13-year-old Aparna. Astrid pressed an iron fragment into Aparna's hand, told her to never let the elders control her or ever let anyone else define her, hugged her, and left. The two friends never saw each other again.
