We must make an exception for this one... They're so brilliant, so young, they meet all the requirements but experience.
— discussion regarding Charlie Lancaster's employment.

Qualifications

To become the Captain of a spacefaring vessel, you need a minumum of 10 years piloting experience. This can be both in space or on land. This experience is usually gained by co-piloting alongside the captain of a vessel and learning from them in an apprentice-like manner. There are, however, sometimes exceptions to this rule.

Historical requirements

Historically, a captain had to be the oldest upon the ship due to the viewpoint that those who were older were more experienced. However, this has since been removed as a requirement because it stopped a lot of younger pilots from progressing in their careers.

Appointment

Captains are appointed by The United Space Confederation when a new mission is announced. There is usually a ceremony broadcast internationally where the captain is given their role, and an official document is signed.

Duties

Alongside their physical tasks, captains also hold full authority over a ship and its crew when voyaging. Even when in contct with a ground control on Earth, captains have a higher ranking position. They are responsible for every crew member aboard their ship, and in some cases, can have legal action taken against them if something goes wrong on their voyage.

Responsibilities

In terms of physical responsibilities, captains are in charge of the day-to-day running of their ship. It is their job to delegate jobs between the relevant crew members and ensure that the crew are happy. They are also responsible for the steering and navigation of the spaceship (sometimes with the help of a co-pilot.
