Captain Charlie Lancaster

What do you think about the captain then? They seem nice enough.
But can they be trusted?
I guess. Why shouldn't they be?
We all have secrets here. Why else would we have volunteered to die in space...

Childhood and Family

Charlie grew up with their parents and older sibling in an area outside of the main cities. Although their family were happy with their life, Charlie always wanted something more than the small village their parents loved. As soon as they were old enough, Charlie moved to the city to pursue their dreams.   The village where Charlie grew up, strongly agreed with the views of The Earthen Ecological Society, that is, that space travel was incredibly damaging and that science should be focused on protecting earth. Because of this, Charlie's choice to become a space pilot caused a lot of friction, and some people have still not "forgiven" them.

Privacy or Secrecy?

It is well known to the crew of the last voyage that Charlie keeps their past hidden, but nobody knows why. Does Charlie just prefer separating their personal and work life, or is it something more sinister? What they don't know or guess, is that Charlie struggles to identify with the person they were when they were younger. They see themselves as a different, more authentic person now and prefer not to associate themselves with who they once were.   This often creates the misconception that Charlie has something to hide from others, and in a way they do, but it definitely isn't the world shattering secret that many are expecting.

Gender Identity

Charlie is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. They realised this for themselves when they were around 16 years old and started living as themselves shortly after moving to the city. This change in their life helped them to feel more comfortable and proud in who they are as a person instead of feeling like an outcast. They found a community of people just like them and realised that the world was larger than the small town in which they grew up.

Making History

When Charlie signed the employment contract to captain the Last Voyage, they became the first legally non-binary space pilot in history. This a huge moment for the non-binary community and allowed lots of other people to be part of the spaceflight industry without having to hide who they were.   Although Charlie recognises the significance of this, they don't like to be referred to as the "first" because they feel it takes away from all the other non-binary pilots who did their job without recognition or support for years before Charlie came along.
