Genetic Modification

When Cats first made there way into the Orion System (due to inhumane human practices of sending animals into space) they were found by Strions, a sentient species with a love for animals. It upset them greatly that cats were unable to survive in their environment, so teams of scientists worked to modify the cat's DNA by combining it with DNA from other Strionan animals.   These changes allowed the cats to breathe the gases in Strion's atmosphere instead of oxygen, and made their bodies adapt to the different temperatures whilst still maintaining the traditional outward appearance of an Earthen cat. These genetically modified creatures are known as space cats.

Color and Markings

Space cats tend to fall into one of two categories: black, or tabby. This is due to these colorations being most prevalent in the cats sent into space by humans.
Tabby
Tabby space cats have a mixed coat, usually a brown with black/dark brown stripes, swirls or spots. They tend to be friendly and intelligent. Tabby space cats are the prefferred pets among Strions.
Black
Black space cats have a plain black coat. They are just as friendly as tabby cats, but tend to camouflage more easily into Strion's environment.

Earth Animal Rights Agency

Animals were sent into space from the beginning of space exploration up until the late 1900s. After this time, animal rights activists questioned the ethics of sending animals to space and it became illegal. In the early 3000s, this law was repealed by the Earthen Government. From this origin came the space cats. Since the lifting of the spaceflight ban, the Earth Animal Rights Agency has re-instated laws to prevent animals from being to sent into space, where there lives are placed in danger.
