Sagegrass

Sagegrass is a city located on Tockotch Hwell's Bay of Sagegrass, for which the Bay gets its name.  It is Tockotch Hwell's second-largest city, second to its capital, Port Sulfur, to which it is connected by at least three roads connecting the two cities, traversing the Firefields.   Sagegrass is known for its acidic but fertile soils in its surrounding region, resulting in great farming conditions for crops of potent herbs, which are important for medical, magical, culinary, and other uses.  Sagegrass's herbs have caused the city to grow in wealth and population, attracting other industries such as hospitality, businesses, refineries, and guildhalls.

Demographics

Majority tiefling with sizeable minorities of humans and halflings, with some gnomes and few elves.  Some Arruckian and Murraskian immigrants.

Government

Cooperation of farmers, extractors, refiners, processers, and salesmen, as well as non-herb-related businesses of the city.  The mayor is typically elected as a good representative of Sagegrass's "bread and butter" industry of herbs and oils, especially when combined with good trade strategies and growth of the city.

Defences

Scouts, watchtowers, and natural defenses of the difficulty of Tockotch's terrain and the difficult nature of sailing past the Filthests.

Industry & Trade

Potions, extracts, oils, and herbs, all derived from the region's unique capability to grow potent and unique herbs, due to the fertile and acidic volcanic soil.

Infrastructure

Cobblestone streets, docks in the bay, roads leading to nearby fields (not as massive and visible as grain fields - smaller).

Districts

  • The Greendocks:  Sagegrass's shipyard and docks which handle imports and exports, with nearby ammenities for sailors.
  • The Greenlight District:  Named after its night lamps which are illuminated with green fire due to the special oil which is produced from the copperpepper plant.  This district is home to many businesses, guildhalls, city halls, and shops.
  • The Greenhouse District:  Named not for the actual greenhouses, but the nickname of factories and extractors, where herbs are treated and turned into a variety of other products such as potions, oils, pastes, and extracts.
  • The Greenfields:  Family or business-owned fields of growing herbs, on the outskirts of the city.  Some herbs are grown on homesteads within the Firefields or the slopes of Mont Caesyn.

Assets

Large bay, scent of herbs drives the mosquitoes away from the relatively close Filthests.

History

Sagegrass was originally settled by tieflings as an agricultural settlement, taking advantage of the fertile soil and relative safety, compared to the other swamps, volcanoes, and firefields of Tockotch.  Tieflings as individuals or families developed unique and proprietary herbs and ways of processing herbs.  They joined forces and improved trade, and more humans and halflings were attracted to the prosperity.  Sagegrass has grown as a result into a sizeable city, with some naval trade to Arruck, Murrask, and (in recent years) Orze, as well as land trade to and from Port Sulfur, which is more accessible to other hwells as well as safer to reach.

Tourism

Draw from the city's herbs and herb-related goods, as well as on-site visits and procurement for herb enthusiasts or those needing individual consultation.

Architecture

Wooden and stone buildings, known for the light-green sage color of the lichen that grows on the wood and stones, as well as herbs that sprout from rooves and cracks in buildings' walls or the roads' seams and cracks.  Some tall towers rise in the sky, from their factories and essenciers beneath, which range from small houses to spacious factories.  The city's structures are often ornate in their carvings, gargoyles, and gothic style, which is typical of tiefling architecture.

Geography

Relatively flat land, with a slight incline up to Mont Caesyn in the distance as well as higher ground in the Firefields.
