Trailbeetle
Trailbeetle is a species of insect beetles that burrow on compact earth, typically manmade trails. They can cause damage at large scale and over time, but they are typically of low level of concern in terms of trail maintenance. However, their burrows can cause pooling of water and loosening of soil, reducing the quality of the trail. Trailbeetles are attracted to compacted earth because it provides them safety from birds and predators that can pick through softer soils, while allowing them to burrow more shallow than they would with loose soils, protecting them from subterranean predators like worms and rodents. Trailbeetles release spore-like eggs into the wind during breeding, which also causes them to build shallow burrows that dot earthen trails.
