wyreth
Wyreth (noun: wyren) is one of the three genders traditionally recognized by the Sumraki-Ashaī of Styx and the Church of Serkatha.
Within the society of Styx wyren were traditionally marginalized and seen as outsiders; in ancient times they were said to have had roles as mediators and spiritual guides but the Church made those fade into obscurity and forced wyrenn into the roles of men or women.
Wyren who took on the role of men were expected to express their gender masculinely and be subservient to women while wyren who took feminine roles were expected to perform femininity but weren't given true recognition as women.
A wyren in a feminine role was traditionally seen as above men but below other women.
Following the Great Revolution the old systems were replaced with more equal ones: men and wyreth were placed on the same level as women and given the right to participate in society in any way they see fit.
Despite these legal recognitions and changes the conservative view still sees wyren as below women regardless. Wyreth is a word of Umbraen Elvish origin but its etymology is unclear. Traditionally people who did not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth were designated the status of wyren and never truly recognized as male or female, even if they identified as such.
Nowadays people who identify with a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth may identify as male, female, wyreth or non-trinary and are starting to be legally and socially recognized as such. Stygian symbol for "wyreth".
