Lady of Graves

Lady of Graves

No record of history, and not even other gods, can recall a time before the Lady of Graves. Her throne lies within a vast, gothic cathedral located on Khatem. From here, she looks both forward and backward in time, observing the births, lives, and deaths of every soul, as she serves as the final arbiter of a soul’s destination after death. Psychopomp servants of Pharasma guide and safeguard newly dead souls along the River of Souls to her realm, where she judges each soul and ensures it is sent to the proper plane for its afterlife, according to its alignment and mortal deeds. Although she can see all possible fates and knows the fate of each individual, free will and choice can alter a soul’s final destination, and she places great weight on the individual’s actions and personal choices. Therefore, the Lady of Graves withholds her final judgment until a soul stands before her. Her prophecies are cryptic, and their full meanings are rarely revealed until the foretold events occur.

Divine Domains

The Ladyof Grave's domain is Khatem , attracts all souls from the Material Plane who pass it. A vast necropolis of courtyards, graves, monuments, and forums filled with the newly dead souls awaiting judgment. Each section is styled after a different outer plane and contains celestials or fiends that look over the souls and assist them to their final destination once The Survivor determines their fate. The Spiral of Fate herself resides in a Palace, where she judges the most difficult souls that arrive at Khatem.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The Lady of Grave's pleasure is often signified through the appearance of scarabs and whippoorwills, both of which can serve as psychopomps to guide a departing spirit to her side. Black roses are thought by her followers to bring good luck, most especially if the rose bears no thorns. The goddess can sometimes allow a departing spirit to give witness to her murder, send a short message to comfort the living, or haunt an enemy. Her displeasure is signified by bleeding from beneath the fingernails, an unexplained taste of rich soil, the discovery of a dead whippoorwill, the feeling that something important has been forgotten, or cold chills down the spine.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

The Lady of Graves is most often depicted as an ashen-skinned Guant woman with white eyes. She wears a dark, hooded, robe-like dress and holds an hourglass filled with red sand. She is alternatively depicted as a mad prophet, a reaper of the dead, or a midwife, depending on her current role.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

According to the Concordance, the Spiral of Fate is the oldest being in reality. According to the Windsong Testaments, she appeared first in this new reality and, through the use of the Omni, willed most of existence into being. Along with the Threshold Watcher , she became one of the two anchors of creation, and between them, the Age of Creation began with the birth of the Great Beyond.
The Lady of Graves is counted among one of the original gods that opposed the Ravenous Beast. She magically imbued the Dead Vault with potent wards against escape, to serve as the Beast's prison. Sometime after, Lady Despair's escape from Khatem and return to the Material Plane brought Undead  and disease to the world.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

The Grey Lady makes no decision on whether a death is just or not; she views all with a cold and uncaring attitude and decides on which Plane a soul will sojourn next. The Lady of Mysteries is also the goddess of birth and prophecy: from the moment a creature is born, she sees what its ultimate fate will be, but reserves final judgment until that soul finally stands before her. As the goddess of death and rebirth, she abhors the undead and considers them a perversion.

Social

Contacts & Relations

The Lady of Graves remains neutral in almost all aspects towards other deities. Sentinel Queen  still bears a slight grudge against her for not revealing Andreus' impending death, and fights broke out between the clergy of Reposed Temple  and the Ascended Principality shortly after the latter's death for similar reasons. Lady Despair and her followers are the closest the Gray Lady has to an enemy. The god of accidental death, Grim Harvester has a fierce rivalry with the Lady of Graves, but it is not altogether clear if this feeling is mutual. The Spiral of Fate also has a mysterious connection to the minor god of the end times, Last Watch, for he hangs in the sky above Khatem  as a gibbous moon. The Mother of Soul's clergy often worked with those of Healing Touch, especially those who delivered Marianan babies.
The Psychopomp  usher Atropos is the Lady of Mystery's youngest daughter, and many psychopomps whisper that she is training Atropos to succeed her when the multiverse ends.
