Tavern At The Crossroads
The Tavern at the Crossroads appears to be nothing more than a large, well-appointed tavern located at a prominent crossroads on the outskirts of the massive city of Bajapur. What very few suspect is that it actually serves two hidden purposes; not only is it the headquarters of the Thieves' Guild of Bajapur, but it is also the current High Temple of Gorja, goddess of thieves and evil merchants.
The so-called 'tavern' is actually is actually closer to a caravanserai or khan, with multiple buildings forming a ring around the central courtyard, including accommodations, stables, bathing facilities, a large kitchen and a hall for eating and drinking. These facilities, of course, all assist in concealing the movement of thieves and stolen goods. Theft at the tavern is strictly forbidden, to ensure the place does not attract the attention of the City Watch.
Belowground is another entire complex which was painstakingly excavated to create a guild headquarters and a small cathedral of Gorja. There are quarters for the priests, acolytes, and guild staff, as well as accommodation for thieves who need to lay low after they have been identified or make preparations to be relocated elsewhere. These accommodations, naturally, are only available for a fee, unless the thief in question is senior in the guild or has the favour of one of the senior guild officials.
The complex also includes a small prison complex for high-value prisoners being held for ransom or to extract valuable information, but it is used only rarely, thanks to the potential risk of exposing the entire operation should the prisoner escape or be tracked down by rescuers.
The tavern itself was built with the wealth stolen by the then-guildmaster over fifty years ago, but it has 'changed hands' regularly as power struggles within the guild have resulted in the sudden death of guildmasters and the replacement of the 'innkeeper' with a new guild agent loyal to the new guildmaster. The current guildmaster, Tozawa Nobusuke, has held onto his position for over a decade, a remarkably long time by the recent standards of the guild. This is due to a combination of political savvy, demonstrated ruthlessness, intimidation, and having blackmail material on every potential usurper.
