Adynoprine Exposure
Adynoprine is one of the Epoch Society's lesser known crimes. In their search for a way to give "humanity" (themselves) superpowers, they created the drug. Cowards that they are, they experimented on children. Of the approximately two hundred test subjects, only three survived. Those three broke loose from the facility, destroying it and killing several key scientists, forcing them to eliminate the project entirely as untenable and also a crime against humanity. This was so effective that even upon their eventual exposure, this project remained buried.
There are two outcomes to adynoprine exposure. And to be clear, this exposure is only possible through injection or otherwise introducing the drug into the subject's bloodstream.
The first, and most common outcome, is death. It is unclear if this would change if introduced to adult subjects, or if they were otherwise prepared or in some radioactive state. But this is the most common reaction. It takes a few days, while the subject's DNA is rewritten to supposedly follow the body's natural pathways to induce a superpower in the subject that fits with their existing biology.
It is entirely possible that there is such a compound out there that could allow the average person to gain superpowers. This is not it.
After a short amount of time, rather than exhibiting powers, the subject will have a variety of physical symptoms, usually centered around the cardiovascular system, and primarily the heart. It doesn't take long before the heart can no longer sustain the body, and the subject dies. The maximum amount of time this is known to take is nine days after initial injection. Further injections are shown to speed up the process.
The second outcome applies when the subject already possesses superpowers. To our best guess, with a limited sample size, this would apply to those with latent superpowers as well, not just those with activated powers. In this case, the person survives, with no ensuing health difficulties specific to the drug. What happens in this case is that their existing powers are expanded and made more powerful.
In one case, it enabled a connection with a powerful alien artifact. In another, it took existing powers and pushed the limits of what that person was capable of. In another, it altered brain chemistry and generated entirely new powers in addition to the existing ones.
I would remind anyone considering their own experimentation that the three subjects were all underage, some by greater degree than others. Adult exposure is unknown, as one theory suggests that the elasticity of youth is needed for successful change.
There are only three survivors.
