HeroCON

A convention of fans of superheroes and a celebration of Supers, the first HeroCON occurred on Carracosta in 1974. The event was designed to showcase the achievements of local and national heroes, as well as inspire good relations between Humans and Supers. Its venue changed in 1982, from the Mancha Colliseum to Admiral Park.   Ocorring during the first quarter of January, most of attendents are children and families as a summer program to do between school vacations. The attractions are aimed for the specific public, with food stands, rides and games while meet-and-greet moments with Supers.

History

In 1981, tragedy almost brought the HeroCON to an end. The schedule was public at the time, and villains attempting to target specific heroes attacked the fair in the first day. While they were not successful in their main objective, the endangering of children and families were used as a point of discussion for opposers of the event. That year the event ended a day shorter, as heroes and organizers promissed to create a more secure event.   The following year, there was talking of suspending the event. Letters from children and fans were addressed to local government advocating in favor to the event. While there has been no confirmation of how, the '82 HeroCON occorred without villain intervation.   In 1986, the first anti-hero meet-greet was advertised. The super Marshall May was invited and their presence caused a great debate and discussion, as well as calls of boycotting and suspending the event. Even so, the fair saw the a large increase attendance numbers that year and many interessed in talking with Marshall May.   HeroCON organizer, Freena Starling, announced following the event that they would not cower from inviting individuals considered non-heroes if their actions were heroic, specially as requested by their public. Months later, Starling advertise the inclusion of more anti-heroes and non-hero Supers in panels to discuss the societal impacts of heroing and what definies hero and villain.

The Event

With panels, lectures, interviews and more, the HeroCON is much more than a simple carnival for children but also where Supers learn about past heroing and what it means to become a hero. There are also stands and workshops for custome design, chosing a name and more.   Attendants often use masks and are not discoraged from hiding their identity, as the event also doubles a carrer expo. While fans often decide to dress as their favourite heroes, aspiring heroes are encouraged to bring their own persona to the event.
