Scope
The motivation behind building Superia
A world of superheroes is a world I always dreamed of. On the heroes and on the super side of it all, so I want to embrace it and build my own without getting stuck on pre-existing universes (which discards fanfiction for a change).
On the side, after a while, I hope to use my alternative super-filled universe as a basis for some writing ideas I have.
The goal of the project
While I hope to make the world inviting for RPG players and readers, my main objective is to have a nice structure and universe to support an original story. Novel or comic, depending on how far I manage to sharpen my drawing skills.
And I don't want world-ending plots out of Superia, while some may appear, but tales of people and some cool fights and make-belief science.
Superia's Unique Selling point
Superia is not Earth. But is close enough: The main stage, Emberly, is in fact a mix of my home country (Brazil) and the most common stage for superhero histories: United States of America. With it not only current times and politics are different, but the past is also a new thing even when so similar to our own.
There are similar things, but not everything is the same! Powers changed how things began and how things are now.
Theme
Genre
Superia is a Superhero story, which gives it a little bit of all in fiction: a bit of science fiction, a bit of alternative history, and a bit of... Spoilers. It also has a bit of slice of life from the heroes side, where we can see the universe from more than the conflicts between supers but by the viewpoint of a inhabitant.
Reader Experience
Familiar, fantastical... Fascinating (hopefully). It is an awe inspiring world, and thought provoking: What if fire wielding heroes walked the streets? And animal-whispered joined the Forest Guard? What if your bully had powers? What if you had them?
It is not all flowers, of course. Power is given to people, and not all wish to use it for good. And sometimes, it's given to people that want to bring needed change.
Reader Tone
Is somewhere in the middle. It's far from The Boys (hyper-dark), but it's not Teen Titans Go (hyper-bright), either. A place where evil exists and tries to hide itself, horrible things can happen but good also happens and grey is the norm.
Recurring Themes
Authority. Who has authority? The powerful? The heirs? Or the people?
Tall skyscrapers, green parks and narrow alleyways. A modern and diverse western metropolis.
There is always: what we tell people we want to do and what truly is we want to do.
A hard choice: the balance between good and duty. Law and altruism.
Character Agency
With a world of Supers, it's a mix bag. World wise, it's hard to believe change can happen, with such powerhouses holding the status quo. Locally, however, heroes can change lives forever. Save them, destroy them, they can inspire movements and be the reason for new laws and restrictions.
Characters are important, they have power, it's just easier to change your neighborhood than the whole world.
Focus
Duty vs Autonomy: There are more people in the world than ever before, as such, more powered homo superia have began to appear. Is it their duty as members of society to become a hero, or is the usage of powers an individual decision?
Technology Influence: Recent public advancements in science and distribution of information have changed the world. It's the beginning of start of the Era of Information.
Government Authority: The government has started to discuss how they should attempt to control the superheroes in this new age, bringing forth restrictions, registration and much more that not everyone is in favor.
Drama
Hero training centers have began to appear as private and government initiative. The ethics of it all is put into question, when these training centers begin as college departments and child companies of conglomerates.
The increase in powered, the ability to converse using the new technological advancements and increased government oversight has began to stir people. Some seek understanding and unity, others separation and subjulgation, most just want to be left alone to live in peace.
It has been six months since the last sighting of Admiral. The symbol of heroism last appearance was neither dramatic or even that memorable, however no one has seen the superhero and un-easy begins to grow.
