Magic

The people of Suraja have a complicated relationship with magic. Ancient history speaks of the world before the Portal, where magic flowed like rivers within the earth and high in the air. Power was free for the taking.
But as with any freely available power, there were competitions to see who could gain the most. Eventually, this led to countless atrocities and disasters that threatened to destroy the world before. The only reason anyone survived was because of the Portal that opened to Suraja.
On Suraja, magic is found only in the earth, through magical crystals called sunstones. At their most basic level, these sunstones act as magical batteries that anyone with training may call upon to fuel their spell-crafting. Over the years, various other uses have been discovered, leading to different forms of sunstones such as the Beacon Sunstones. 
However, most sunstones above ground have been stripped from the earth, save for a select few sunstone groves tended to by druidic circles. Most sunstones gathered for magical purposes are mined in carefully guarded mines deep below the earth. Each mine is carefully managed to prevent any accidental delving into the Underdark – a half-mythical place deep below the earth said to be filled with demons from before the Calamity.
