Null, Deity of dead dragons

Death Null

Null is the Deity of dead dragons, taking under Their care any creed with a fate to meet despite Their older siblings Tiamat and Bahamut laying claim to a subset of draconic species, knowing They would be needed by all of them in the end. They don't feel much but irritation toward Their older siblings, deities who don't understand Them immediately and living beings. Literature on Null writes Them as cold, though many see Them as guilt ridden over the death of their mother. A few make the bold claims that the Deity is simply tired but this is purely anecdotal.   Clerics of Null are few and far between because They are a practical working deity who does not operate on worship. Null doesn't indulge much like fielding prayer and making miracles- They almost exclusively tend to what They feel is Their purpose and that's it. Despite the existence of clerics there is no true direct contact and Null does not seem to favor offerings or loyalty. They are said to listen to what is spoken softly to Their shrines but rarely respond, with truthfulness and authenticity imperative to proper prayer rather than worship.   The Raven Queen and Null interacted frequently considering They're both a form of death incarnate. They are kind to each other. Most Null worshippers also worship the Raven Queen to some extent and rather than separate temples Null followers usually maintain shrines in the temples of the Raven Queen. This is more in line with Null's distaste for worship.   Null was reportedly sometimes seen at the deaths of sufficiently draconic beings, and most doctrine of Theirs has been established during such encounters. Sufficiently draconic beings is known to include true dragons, draconic bloodline sorcerers, half dragons, and dragonborn with higher percentages of dragon blood. This is very inconsistent and it isn't controlled or even understood how the contact is made during such times or what really compels Null to appear.

Divine Domains

Draconic Death, inevitability, lives laid bare

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The divine symbol of Null is a circle divided diagonally into white and black semicircles. They were also sometimes associated with black iron lanterns.

Tenets of Faith

  • Death comes for all. Accept this.
  • Judge not by color or kind. You all die just the same.
  • Nothing is permanent.
  • Lying wastes limited breath.
  • If you cannot lay your soul bare before your fellows, you will not enjoy your eventual judgement.
  • Live for yourself. May no Deity or Mortal stand in the path of authenticity.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Acting as Draconic Death:
  • Collecting souls of deceased draconic beings
  • Ferrying collected souls across the Saltscale River

Mental characteristics

Gender Identity

Null is referred to as They/Them in all texts. Null is considered fully agender by many, but most texts don't even go so far as to define that and leave it to the umbrella term non-binary.

Failures & Embarrassments

Once upon a time Hlal did a bad and got to say to Null's face a hearty

Mental Trauma

The guilt Null is said to carry shapes a lot of who They are and is theorized to be part of what drives Them to a generally isolationist existence.

Intellectual Characteristics

Null is very intelligent, purportedly cannot be lied to even by gods, and has flawless memory with an eye for detail. It's because of this that They have such distaste for their older sibling Hlal after falling victim to a single prank. It is traditional for any cleric of Hlal to apologize for their Goddess's prank whenever they pass a place of worship associated with Null.

Morality & Philosophy

Null is not a fan of the undead. Wandering, trapped or hurt souls They don't consider to be worthy of punishment and are rather seen as victims. However They only collect who They should, when They should, as They can. Unlike the Raven Queen They do not crusade against rule breakers. They merely wait- time eventually comes for them, and as such so do They. Null has no particular strong feelings towards seers, mediums, necromancers or other mortals who touch death in some way. They do take issue with unjust dragon slayers and have been known to curse certain individuals for particularly egregious crimes.

Taboos

  • Excessive worship
  • Lies and deception
  • Undeath
  • Denial of inevitability
  • Unjust dragon slaying

History

Null and Bahamut are the same age, both from the same triplet birth. They do not have great affection for one another but aren't enemies. Bahamut doesn't approve of Null's supposed wallowing in guilt, and Null does not approve of Bahamut's favoring of metallic dragons.

Shared Acquaintances

Tiamat is an enemy of both as She resents each of them in different ways.

History

Hlal is Null's eldest sister. They used to be on fairly alright terms but it only took Hlal successfully pranking Null a single time to drive a rift between the two that has yet to be conquered.

Shared Acquaintances

Bahamut and Tiamat are full siblings to them both.

History

Null met the Raven Queen on Their first collection of a draconic being with humanoid blood. An understanding was quickly and peacefully established between the two and they have remained friendly ever since.

Relationship Reasoning

Null is Death for all of draconic kind. The Raven Queen is Death for the majority of humanoids. As such they have a great deal of overlap in beliefs and worshipers, and while they do not always agree they have always gotten along well with one another.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

Neither approve of undeath, though the Raven Queen actively seeks to quash it while Null is content to wait for time to bring strays back to the ferry.

Shared Acquaintances

Both have encountered and are generally friendly with the few other minor death dieties, such as the Great Phoenix.
