Altoric Guard
The Altoric Guard is an elite cadre of warriors dedicated to the protection of Berythian Grandmasters, embodying a rare fusion of martial prowess and profound elemental discipline. Altorics are drawn from the most resilient and disciplined members of The Berythian Tradition, often those with exceptional command over a specific element—Fire, Earth, Water, or Air—according to the Carabod Sadhes (The Procession of the Elements). This ritual hierarchy, though downplayed for diplomacy, positions Fire as the primordial Element associated with mages, casting the Altorics’ allegiance to the Grandmasters as part of a higher calling, demanding unwavering loyalty and mastery over elemental force.
The journey to join the Guard is marked by intense physical and arcane training in the Proving Grounds, arenas designed to hone both combative strength and elemental finesse. Here, initiates confront trials that align with their elemental column, forging a deep, personal bond with their chosen Element: the passion of Fire, the resilience of Earth, the fluid adaptability of Water, or the clarity and detachment of Air. Through these trials, Altorics refine their abilities to wield raw elemental power in service of their charges, becoming elemental warriors who can channel these forces to counter threats to the Grandmasters. Many who enter this rigorous training, however, fail to reach the standard required, as only those with both overwhelming power and discipline are chosen for final admission.
As the Grandmasters become increasingly absorbed in their studies and attunement to Matter, their mastery over elemental command brings a formidable, if detached, approach to human interaction. To address this, the Altorics develop a specialized form of communication—a secretive cant exclusive to their ranks—that bridges the isolation of their charges. This language allows Altorics to interpret the Grandmasters’ precise needs and respond effectively, ensuring secure and unimpeded communication during moments of critical importance. Known for their taciturn and guarded nature, the Altoric Guard often embody a blunt pragmatism, understanding that their role is not one of subtlety but of sheer force. Though their presence may inspire awe and mystery among the populace, they are staunch guardians, members of the Circle of Masters who stand at the threshold between the Berythian Grandmasters and any who might threaten the sacred hierarchy of the Tradition.
