Veiq
The Veiq are a hardy and resilient people who have learned to carve out a living in the most inhospitable corners of Arlok, namely Ret and Criamon-Sothet. Their culture and way of life are as striking and memorable as the frozen landscapes they call home, centered around a profound respect for their challenging environment and a deeply held sense of community.
Unlike most Arloki cultures, the Veiq do not follow a centralized religion, and instead, hold a profound reverence for the land and its natural forces, embodying a pragmatic spirituality tied to their survival. This is manifested in their daily rituals and customs, which are closely interwoven with the rhythms of nature and the cycles of the seasons.
Language plays a central role in Veiq culture, with Strvingydh spoken by the majority and a distinct dialect, celebrated through various cultural festivals and gatherings that focus on storytelling, poetry, and oral histories.
Life in Criamon-Sothet is no easy task. Yet, in the towns of Engrunafte and Harrelk, the Veiq have built vibrant, close-knit communities that stand in stark contrast to the stark, barren surroundings. Despite the seemingly dull exterior, these towns are hubs of cultural activity with unique traditions. One of these is the annual Ice Sculpting Festival, a celebration that transforms the town squares into fantastical landscapes of intricately carved ice structures, reflecting the Veiq's ingenuity and their intimate relationship with the icy environment.
A curiosity about the Veiq is their connection to the ancient Realm of Klar Bimment. The four islands northwest of the mainland bear names of Bimment's sons, hinting at a historical link to the illustrious kingdom. The Veiq's legends tell stories of their ancestors serving as the summer courtiers in these princely retreats, passing down tales of grand feasts, elaborate courtly games, and magnificent ceremonial rituals that create a colorful contrast to their present austere life.
There are subtle differences between the Veiq of Criamon-Sothet and those in Ret, particularly in their dietary habits. The former are known for their unique cuisine, which includes hearty stews made from the scant flora and fauna of the region, while the Ret Veiq are famed for their masterful ice fishing techniques and dishes featuring fresh, raw fish.
The enigmatic Batah's Shrine, or "tomb" in the Old Tongue, holds a particular fascination for the Veiq. The legendary pirate Batah Biy's shipwreck is said to lie beneath its icy waters, and it has become a rite of passage for young Veiq divers to brave the frigid waters in a symbolic search for the lost treasure. While few truly expect to find the legendary loot, these dives are seen as a test of courage and endurance, embodying the spirit of the Veiq people.
