While the Hammerfall clan is best known as smiths and weapon forgers, Golran has always heard the "Call of Stone". Second son of Kirin Hammerfall, Golran is glad that his older brother Kinvar is taking up the family trade.
With the family's acquisition of the Dourstone Mines in Bloodstone Vale, organized by his younger brother Ulfgar, Golran now is in control of his own mining operation. He is also betrothed to Marebald Hedelstone, a perfectly suitable match arranged by the Kirin and Thane Borl Hedelstone.
Golran believes in tradition, structure, and law. He has already had run-ins with the other mine managers, who seem to be mildly amused at his law-abiding nature. The Hammerfall and Hedelstone guards who came with him to Virdin have foiled some efforts to sabotage his operation and turned the culprits into the Garrison for judgement. There is ample evidence implicating the other mine managers in allowing the attempts, if not ordering them directly.
Golran is causing another, bigger problem for the mine managers. He is treating his miners fairly and with respect for the work they do. Sure, they're not dwarves, but miners should stick together. Given his treatment of the miners, and the fact that he talks about nothing else at times, he is starting to pull abused and dissatisfied miners from the other mines.
While more miners wouldn't be a good thing if the production was limited, it seems that Dourstone was more interested in his cult than in mining, and was actually sitting on several veins of Bloodstone that he left untapped. With the influx of workers, and entirely new veins to mine, Hammerfall Mines is off to a very good start.
For now Lord-Mayor Ferrin and the other mine managers can do nothing but wait for an opening, but as Golran becomes more successful, the powers that be will have to do something or risk playing second fiddle to the newest manager in town.
