Gray College

Founded by Emelyn the Gray. The Grey College concentrates on the banishment of fiends. Guardians of the Veils' integrity and stability, the Gray College moves to prevent evildoers from using planar gateways and punish any who they catch trying. The Gray College is a response to the Witch-King Zhengyi, who opened portals to the Abyss and called upon Orcus to enhance his might. Their purpose is to close planar openings and portals that could lead to evil purposes.

Structure

Requirements

Joining the Grey College requires several lengthy interviews, and includes magical discernment of intentions and goals. Members must agree to combat the influence of fiends on Toril. The College teaches planar and lore and mechanics, and studies the mannerisms and typical behaviors of fiends.   Emelyn interviews and magically determines the motivations of all who apply for training in the Grey College. The Grey College accepts any good or neutral spellcasters into its membership, provided they follow the mandates set down to close planar portals.

Assets

Resources

Those petitioning for entry into the Grey College who show spellcasting ability become apprentices. They may request a bed, desk and cabinet in a guildhall. They are mentored by Grey Adepts, Mages and Masters, often resulting in confusing or conflicting messages and expected to follow any mage’s orders and directions. They are allowed access to the Guild’s basic libraries.   Members have access to the college's library, and may request to copy a spell from the college's vast collection of spellbooks, but must gain at least one point of renown before requesting another spell.

Renown

As the core of the Grey College's functions, each member of the college strives to be a guardian of the integrity and stability of the Veil and its associated planes. They understand that planar travel and portals are necessary, but they seek to thwart evil extraplanar creatures and mortals that would use portals for nefarious purposes. Members gain renown by finding and defeating extraplanar threats, closing planar rifts and undertaking other missions for the college.

Apprentice (1 Renown)

Apprentices are beginning members and given access to the resources of the College.

Associate (3 Renown)

On reaching 3 Renown, Apprentices are considered Associates. They are given a medallion or pin with the College's symbol and finalize their instruction in Planar Lore. Associates are instructed in Planar Lore and expected to become experts in three planes. When making an Arcana check focusing on planar phenomena, the Associate adds +2 to his Arcana Roll. If the check focuses on the three planes of expertise, the Associate is considered to have Expertise, and doubles their proficiency bonus for that Arcana check instead of adding +2..

Gray Adept (10 Renown)

Gray Adepts may request to copy a formula for the creation of a common or uncommon magical item, or the sigil sequence for any Gray College branch. The member may not request a new formula or sigil sequence until they gain at least one point of renown. Any Mage who shares or sells a requested formula loses access to this resource. They also gain the Planar Insight special ability.   Planar Insight. Your in depth study of the planes and planar phenomena give you an advantage against the planar foe you now face. You may either give yourself advantage on one roll, or give the planar creature disadvantage on one roll. This only works when used against extraplanar creatures, and must be declared before the roll is made. Planar Insight recharges after a short or long rest.

Gray Mage (25 Renown)

Request to copy a formula for the creation of a rare magical item. The member may not request a new formula (including common or uncommon formulas) until they gain at least one point of renown. Any Mage who shares or sells a requested formula loses access to this resource. Mages also gain the Seal Rift special ability.   Seal Rift. Gray Mages are masters of the veil, and may use their arcane knowledge of the veil to effectively counterspell a summoning spell or spell-like ability, such as a demon or devil's ability to summon allies. Seal Rift recharges after a short or long rest.

Gray Master (50 Renown)

Gray Masters are considered the leaders of the College. Only Emelyn and Myrddian are currently considered Masters. If another Gray Mage that rank they will be assigned a Mage who starts out at half the Master's own level. The Mage is considered a retainer of the Master and may be assigned duties as needed, though the Mage's first loyalties are to the College, not the Master. Gray Masters are also granted access to formulas for very rare magical items, following the same rules as above. The Master has considerable authority and wields the Executive Powers of the Gray College.

Structure and Headquarters

Emelyn the Grey is the aging leader of the Grey College. His apprentice, Myrddian Viligoth (an archmage in his own right), is believed to be Emelyn's hand-picked successor whenever Myrridin is finally ready to settle down. Emelyn has hand-picked the few mages who act as mentors and teachers in the college, all experts of planar phenomena.   The Grey College is based in Bloodstone City located in Bloodstone Pass. Frequent expeditions into Vaasa to observe and counteract the remnants of Zhengyi's magic are part of the College's curriculum.
