Mass

In comic books and superhero video games, we do not often have to pay strict attention to physical mass. Volume and distance and Time and velocity are much more likely to matter.

Every once in a while, though, an estimate of mass in APs is critical to saving the day!

Most of these benchmarks are going to be based on values measured on the surface of Earth Prime, and so are likely to show up in "pounds" rather than "kilograms". However, the same gravitational factor will apply to objects in zero gravity or high gravity environments, so the APs of "weight" or "mass" remain consistently comparable.

0 APs of mass ranges from 25 lbs up to the equivalent of 50lbs. Infants and toddlers weigh 0 APs in all known sentient species. Two cinder blocks or six gallons of water will be 0 APs. A twin size mattress is likely to weigh 0 APs.

1 AP of mass, up to about 45 kg, peaks at roughly the equivalent of 100 lbs. Human children weigh 1 AP. Many "bulk" items from the "garden center" section of a home improvement store are going to be sold in 1 AP increments, such as large bags of soil or sacks of landscaping glass pebbles. Typical punching bags at a boxing gymnasium weigh 1 AP. An adult cougar (not Puma, we mean the wild animal variety that is not in any way a metahuman or even metahuman-adjacent) probably weighs 1 AP. An oven meant to be installed in a home kitchen has a weight in the 1 AP range.

2 APs of mass is the default expectation for weight of an NPC, most adult Player Characters, and anything else from a mass of 45.5 kg or weight of 101 lbs through an upper limit of 90.72 kg or 200 lbs. Whole-house air conditioner compressor units weigh 2 APs.

3 APs of mass is twice as much stuff as 2 APs. It goes up to 400 lbs, 181.44 kg. A full size home refrigerator weighs 3 APs, especially if the freezer area is on the bottom of the unit.

Author's Notes

This is a restatement of the Official Rules, hopefully making the concept a little more straightforward for the way our particular brains work. In the White Book, this was "Weight", but we might be dealing with places under a different force of gravity than the surface of Earth Prime.
