Mimic House

Written by Chrundle_the_Great

General Summary

Pressured into securing a foothold in Redgaard, the debtors recruit a guide and seek Reed Manor on behalf of two factions. Along the way, they learn more about the city's horrors: rival adventuring parties, changing territories, and monsters of tremendous might and size.

Session Notes

  • Peter and Tim search for Kragan, who was controlled by his fungal host
  • Aldor offers to safeguard Eldemir's new longsword and cast legend lore on it
  • He introduces the group to a guide who already knows Reed Manor well
  • Alcalad, quiet orc tracker with a dire mole companion
    1. He retrieved eldritch lilies from Queen's Park Garden in the Inner City
    2. Oscar has hired him before, but hasn't paid him recently
  • Alcalad has an uncanny sense for detecting danger within the city
  • He points out an invisible mage and dismantled shield guardian nearby
  • Sarlen splits off to distract and observe the mage's pursuers
  • Wilderkith, bioterrorists working to prevent the reclamation of Redgaard
    1. Anthracia, the Princess of Venom, vengeful dryad and the party's leader
    2. Sylphise, forest nymph with a penchant for unspeakable violence
    3. Logger, puppy-like treant made from Anthracia's branches
  • They mutilate the mage's apprentices and steal some research papers
    1. "A lot of people would pay a lot of money for the dowsing rod."
    2. Sarlen watches them move towards the Chapel of St. Brenna
  • Alcalad and Eldemir convince the mage they mean him no harm
  • Hound, Amethyst Academy who was nearly killed by Wilderkith
    1. He asks the group to guard him while he regains spellpower
    2. In exchange, he will help them with one task of their choice
  • Goblins with strange delerium-infused weapons burrow into the building
  • The dire mole ambushes them, and the group interrogates the survivor
    1. "Krenko wanted us to search for loot. We didn't wanna hurt anybody!"
    2. The last goblin is allowed to return to his boss's underground hideout
  • Hound thanks the group and, without his apprentices or shield guardian, seeks the path back to Emberwood Village
  • Sarlen trades meat at Oleg's Master Meats for the following information:
    1. Minotaur pirates and flesh-eaters terrorize the western Drann River
    2. The hoppers moved to the von Drakken estate in Old Town
  • The group finds Reed Manor and avoids owlboars "guarding" the courtyard
  • Oscar's apprentices are unsettlingly positive and make "small talk"
  • As Alcalad and Eldemir lower their guard, the apprentices stare in unison, and the entire house comes alive
  • The dire mole shreds small mimics, protecting Alcalad from being swarmed
  • Eldemir levitates above acid-streaked floors and duels mirror mimics
  • The house shrinks the group and sends animate coins and utensils at them
  • Finally, the emaciated, human-like "brain" emerges and casts revolting spells
  • Alcalad's preparedness, Eldemir's ferocity, and the dire mole's strength ultimately fell the hideous brain
    1. The house begins to fill with bubbling, boiling stomach acid
    2. It had used hallucinatory terrain to disguise itself as Reed Manor
    3. It sprouts dozens of humanoid legs and sprints into the Inner City
  • Injured, the group sees the real Reed Manor several blocks away
