Eldemir Barling

Written by Chrundle_the_Great

Eldemir Barling is a paladin sworn to an enigmatic entity who speaks through stars and wind. He attributes these visions to Mystra, the Goddess of Magic.

Description

Standing six and a half feet tall, Eldemir is a lean, muscular, red-skinned tiefling man with close-cropped dark hair and eyes with striking blue irises. The Elyrian man's face, chest, and arms are etched with golden constellation-like scars that seem to resemble arcane glyphs in their specificity.

Personality

He is laconic and appreciates others who speak plainly. Eldemir defines himself by his faith, and his faith requires that he be both curious and open-minded, as the visions he receives are often nebulous. Eldemir can be both forceful and commanding when he feels the need arise, but he only does so when he is almost certain his words will be heeded.

Abilities

A self-proclaimed paladin, Eldemir credits his magic and wards to his oath. However, uncharacteristically of a paladin, whenever the bare-chested warrior uses divine magic to heal or smite, his mysterious scars ignite and bleed.

Relationships

The Silver Order

Having applied to train with the Silver Order as soon as he was of age, Eldemir respects their knights and squires because he knows the rigorous training required of them. As devout to the Sacred Flame as any of his peers, the only times he felt disconnected from the other trainees was when discussing his wild intuitions about magic; the Church's blind prejudice against arcane spellcasters is a topic about which Eldemir isn't quite sure how to feel.

History

From the moment of his birth, Eldemir's life was shaped by forces beyond his control. He was born in the holy city of Lumen to Héctor Peralez and Ava von Bahr, minor human nobles with significant mercantile ventures. Immediately, the infant's race sparked rumors of infidelity, consorting with devils, and other scandalous whispers. As dictated by the Edicts of Lumen, the thought-to-be mageborn Eldemir was swiftly disinherited and made a ward of the Amethyst Academy.   Later in life, Eldemir legally changed his surname to "Barling," which was technically distinct from his mother's maiden name. Whether he did so in defiance or in seeking a connection with parents he never really knew is unclear.   When the mages discovered that Eldemir was, in fact, not mageborn, he was taken in by the Church of the Sacred Flame, where he became a devout follower of the Sacred Flame. As soon as he was of age, Eldemir began training with the Silver Order in weapons and horsemanship. He found purpose with the paladins as a hunter of those who used magic in "destructive" and "perverse" ways.   On a fateful day after the Cataclysm, as a squire-in-training, Eldemir confronted some smugglers harboring delerium. When one of them, a sorceror, began channeling dark magic, Eldemir tried to wrest control of the delerium.   As soon as his skin touched the gemstone, everything turned to darkness.
"Magic is a force of creation. It is truly terrible when it is misused."
— Unknown
One year later, Eldemir was fished out of the Caspian Sea, naked and covered in golden scars resembling leylines. Unable to recall the time after touching the delerium, he faintly felt that he had been robbed of something, but Eldemir also felt a new sense of purpose and allegiance to the voice he heard, which he attributed to Mystra.
