Courtesan of the Gods

Qualifications

The process of finding the Courtesan of the Gods relies entirely on the clairvoyance of their predecessor. The Courtesan records their visions and often their successor is a recurring figure, allowing clerics abroad to search for the individual Sune has chosen. Often there are periods of time in which the Vase's seat is empty, especially in the sad circumstance of a Courtesan who died before their time, during which the search is widespread and frantic. The Courtesan is chosen by Sune only, and so no qualifications are needed.

Requirements

Without exception Courtesans display some level of clairvoyance from a young age, although it is unclear if this is a requirement or simply a side effect of Sune's favor already having been bestowed.

Appointment

There are many ceremonies that a Courtesan can undergo to be formally taken into the Vase, depending on their age. However, it is their first love that is the most important; whether it be a hobby, a person, or a place, experiencing passion unlocks their ability to see the future. The ceremony on this occasion is rather elaborate and has both private and public rites, which include the metaphorical offering of their first love to Sune. It is known to be upsetting to very young clerics, who imagine the goddess might take away what is offered to her.

Duties

The Courtesan of the Gods is Sune's mouthpiece in Talonn, and acts as such. Although they are revered and loved by their followers, the burden is immense. Sune's worship is widespread, so missive and requests come in constantly and need reply. Much of this work can be delegated to other Vase clerics, and must be given the Courtesan's ties and obligations to the court of the God-King. It is also traditional for the Courtsan to marry the God-King as their second wife (or spouse often this match is ceremonial due to age, gender, or simply personal differences, but the Courtesan is expected to use their powers to advise the king.

Benefits

The Courtesan lives and works out of the Vase, one of the most beautiful temples in Talonn, at the pinnacle of Chandris. They enjoy basically unlimited wealth and power if they so choose. However, it does come with a significant lack of freedom.

Accoutrements & Equipment

The Courtesan is appointed a personal honor guard-- also known as the Beloved, the entire group is often raised together in the Vase. The Beloved honor guard vary as much as their Courtesans, but are always present, even if there is only one. The current Courtesan has four Beloved guards.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

The Courtesan can only be dismissed by Sune herself, which has happened but rarely. Otherwise, the appointment is until death.
