Tarvestine's (TAR-vess-teen's)

Tarvestine's is a genetic degenerative disease that most often appears in moon elf communities. It is 100% fatal if it expresses, and can take up to twenty years to kill those it afflicts. It was first noted in 1032 Crystal, when the elven princess Tarvestine vas Ulis fell ill and rapidly declined. Named for the princess it killed, the disease expresses itself at mid-to-late adolescence. The symptoms and progression are noted below.   The most notable sufferer of Tarvestine's in modern Talonn is Lady Shira Vas Otten .

Transmission & Vectors

Tarvestine's is genetic.

Causes

The disease is likely caused by a recessive mutation common to individuals in the moon elf community, although it sometimes appears in other humanoids very rarely.

Symptoms

  • Muscular degeneration
  • Cardiovascular weakness
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Loss of feeling in extremities
  • Paralysis
  • Weight loss & loss of appetite

Treatment

Tarvestine's can be staved off by magically restoring the damage it does to muscle and organ tissue, but as it progresses into its later stages there is no treatment that can save the individual.

Prognosis

The progression of Tarvestine's is as follows:
  1. Chronic fatigue and muscle weakness in the extremities. Often starts manifesting in late adolescence, and is generally diagnosed at that time.
  2. The patient begins to experience numbness in the extremities; usually this starts in the feet and legs.
  3. Paralysis begins to set in, often in the legs, leaving the patient wheelchair-bound. Generally the loss of appetite begins soon after. Muscular degeneration accelerates.
  4. The patient suffers extreme weight loss, and frequently die from cardiovascular events as the muscular degeneration begins to affect the vital organs. This is the final stage of Tarvestine's, resulting always in organ failure, most often heart failure.
