Synd War

The Synd War was a formative ancient tribal war that lasted for 87 years, waged between multiple tribes of the eastern Thes'set Desert and the newly founded Synd Tribe.

The precursory background of the Synd War begins with a group of tribal people of the ancient eastern Thes'set Desert. In 3359, a group of scholars banded together and began studying more complex topics, delving into sand-magic, and pushing for new cultural advancements within their tribe. This caused increasing dissension between their people and tribal leaders. A central figure of this movement was Kharaj Thu'Felca, a brilliant young scholar who is now considered one of the greatest figures of early sand-magic and ist practices. Relations between the scholarly faction and their tribe steadily declined for the next 12 years, resulting in the scholars and their families being cast from the community as outcasts in 3371.

With the help of their knowledge and basic magic, the scholars survived the harsh desert, and decided to peacefully form their own tribe. Kharaj Thu'Felca was made leader.
The scholar outcasts forged their own culture, calling themselves the Synd Tribe. They were based nomadically in an eastern region of the vast tribal desert in what is now @Trizon.
The Synds cast aside unwanted tribal traditions, adopted new ones, and even reimagined their religious ideologies. They saw themselves as a peaceful and scholarly new tribe, and were exceedingly optimistic about their future. They celebrated the anniversary of being outcast as a cultural holiday. They strongly hoped to begin bridging the gap between their new tribe and the tribe from which they had come, and always imagined themselves to be strong allies of their former people. They made attempts to trade, which introduced new ideas and development to the region.

Tensions between their former tribe, as well as other tribes in the region, flared suddenly and violently in 3379. The Synd's settlement was attacked by their former tribe and 2 others without warning, and about 40% of the Synd people were brutally killed. The Synds, who had no training in combat and did not even have weapons, were left shocked. The enemies returned a few days later to burn the Synd's settlement, after which the Synds fled northwest and settled in a cave location. About 60% of the Synd tribe died during this time.
Following this, the Synds halted their interactions with other tribes, and aimed to keep to themselves. Fearful of encountering enemy tribes, they adopted a non-nomadic lifestyle and became proficient in agriculture, which was unheard of in the region. After a few further squabbles and ambushes, the Synds went into hiding, concealing themselves from other tribes for the next 21 years.
In the year 3400, a severe drought and famine struck the area. The Synd people decided to come out of hiding and contact other tribes for the first time since the massacre, as they had a comfortable amount of crops, foodstores, and livestock, and felt great sorrow for the people of their heritage.
The other tribes, realizing the wealth that the Synd had, raided their cave town, killing almost 50% of the their people, destroying and burning their settlement, and stealing their foodstores and livestock. During this 2nd massacre, the revered leader and founder of the Synds, Kharaj Thu'Felca, was killed.
The survivors then decided to begin training in combat and defense. By now, most of the original outcasts had died, and the tribal leaders were mainly made up of their grandchildren.

The taking up of combat training and weapons production was the beginning of a long, multi-generational war between the Synds and other tribes of the eastern Thes'set Desert. The Synds focused on military strategy and war magic, while their adversaries considered violence and powerful weaponry to be the best forms of warfare. Decades into the war, the Synds also began employing types of early psychological warfare, including kidnapping young women from enemy tribes and assimilating them into their culture.
Throughout the war, the former tribe from which the Synds had originated was always their fiercest enemy. Certainly, all aims of eventually uniting and peacefully allying with their people were now gone. The generational lines between the enemy and the Synds grew progressively tangled, especially with the Synd practice of stealing the daughters of their enemies. Often, the enemy tribe fought their own grandsons or other family members on the battlefield, a fact that the Synds accentuated with a practice of assigning symbols and talismans to family lines, highlighting their combined bloodlines.
The war between the tribes lasted for a total of 87 years, during which time the Synds were always outnumbered, but grew significantly in magic, economic progress, warfare, and as a culture overall. They also began branching into multiple Synd tribes, all of which were tightly aligned with each other, allowing them to expand their controlled land and numbers.
The Synd Tribe was persistantly vocal in the objective of their war, which was that they demanded that they be allowed to claim a land of their own, where they could remain permanently, without raids or attacks from the other tribes. The other tribes seemed to instead want to push the Synds out of the Thes'set Desert completely, whether by forced exile or extermination. However, over the decades, the exact purpose of the continued warfare was not always clear, with the other tribes fighting simply because they had been raised fighting the Synds.

Gradually, the war began to tilt further to the Synd's favor, especially after they began forming multiple tribes. They held an economic agricultural advantage, and also a strong war-magic advantage.
During a drought and subsequent famine, Synd was able to keep its people strong and healthy thanks to their foodstores and farming practices, while their nomadic enemy tribes found themselves in a time of death and starvation. The tribes requested that the Synd open trade and share their food and water. They refused, resulting in a bloody battle that they decisively won.
Following this, the Synd offered to let members of the enemy tribes join them permanently. Many people switched to the Synd tribe, seeing this as the only alternative to starvation and slaughter. Infamously, Synd ended up executing almost all of the men who had joined, after the uncovering of a spy ring amongst some of them.
Once word of the mass execution reached the other tribes, they were enraged, and gathered for a devastating battle. The battle lasted for about a week, after which Synd emerged as the clear victor. Utterly defeated, the other tribes at last agreed to end the war. The other tribes again requested food from the Synd tribes. They refused.
The Synd people settled in favorable desert land in the northeastern Thes'set Desert, claiming it as their own and founding the country of Thelyan in Year 3487, Ancient Era.
